This is guesswork or wishful thinking. A documentary cannot be based on guesses.

As for Eleanor Roosevelt, it has only been rumored/speculated that she was bisexual or lesbian. That has never been confirmed. And much of those rumors/speculation is because she had lesbian friends, including a particularly close relationship with 1 lesbian. But a lot of straight woman have had very close, platonic friendships with lesbians.

So what exactly was the need to have a discussion from various pov's (as the link proposes) regarding Eleanor's alleged bisexuality/lesbianism, based on tabloid speculation/rumor??

Besides, I think the show kind of hinted there might have been some lesbian interest/activity on Eleanor's part.

And there is a huge difference between FDR's relationship with Lucy Mercer, and Eleanor's relationship with Lorena Hitchok. And that difference really shouldn't be difficult to figure out. The difference is that FDR's romance with Lucy Mercer is HISTORICAL FACT. Not only is it historical fact, its historical fact that had a huge and long lasting historical impact on Franklin's/Eleanor marriage. While Eleanor's romance with Loreena IS NOT HISTORICAL FACT. It's just unconfirmed rumor/speculation. And even if were true, it doesn't seem to have a significant impact on anything, other then enhancing Eleanor's love life, and perhaps giving her a fun sex life.

So the show shouldn't haven't given equal weight to both "romances".

Well, it has been said that FDR was both the most loved American president ever, and the most hated American president ever.

Apparently members of the right still feel the need to hate him. I guess the ghost of FDR should take it as a compliment that 69 years after his death, the right still feels such a great need to hate him.

What's ironic is that it's members of the right who are bashing FDR for being bigoted against Indians, Mexicans, and homosexuals.

I was working at a WWII reenactment, and a very sweet old lady with white hair and a cane, looking like the most perfect stereotypical great grandma you could ever wish for, came up and asked me what was going to happen next.

We had one of the best FDR reenactors in the country (RJ Lyndsey) getting ready to speak, so I told that FDR was about to appear and told her where. She looked at me and said, "I didn't listen to that son of a bi+ch when he was alive and I'm not going to listen to him now."

I had a hard time not bursting into laughter before I could direct her elsewhere.

Michelangelo Signorile is a gay activist, radio host and Huffington Koolaid drinker.
In his world everone is gay.

Eleanor enjoyed the company of activist women. Many were lesbians. So what? We have gay freinds. What does that make us?

Signorile is a self-righteous media whore. The next Jerry Springer.

Who cares whether ER was bi-sexual. I think it unlikely that a 40-50 y/o ER with six kids would have an affair with a 30 something 200 lbs. Lady reporter.

And if did happen, spare me the details, please.

reply

Anyone interested in whether Eleanor was bi or not, can't stand the Roosevelts anyway. A bunch of catfish tea-baggers. If this is their hang up about a nearly fifteen hour series you have to wonder how they managed to tear themselves away from the Kardashians and watch something on PBS. But it is no wonder, since these sleazy tea-baggers did not really watch the series. Also if or not Eleanor was bi, well so what? Folks complaining, like the rancid posters on this board, are biggoted anti-gay and probably anti-black, and anti-semite anyway. Sarah Palin anyone??

If you care about such things, FDR really was a "Homophobe" his involvement in the Newport 1920 scandal is proof of that.

FDR was also involved - behind the scenes of course - in outing a Republican Senator from Massachusetts in 1942. This 'outing' was against the -live and let live - rules the DC elite then lived by. As you can imagine, the Republicans were looking for payback. So when they learned of the Welles' incident in 1943, they put on the pressure and FDR's big buddy got the ax.

Tit for Tat.

Unless someone actually tried to sleep with her and either got accepted or turned down, and admitted it, I don't know how you can prove any of this, or why it even matters.

reply

I find it hard to believe that FDR was homophobic - he was very accomodating to his wife's friends, who were out lesbians, and doesn't seem to have resented their frequent presence.

reply

He didn't seem to care who did what in their private life as long as it stayed in their private life, which was possible back then.
