why isn't this dubbed
If this is a netflix original production why isn't it dubbed in english the animation is awesome and having to read subtitles is very distracting.

shareNevermind i just figured out that you can change the language to english. Oops
shareThe Japanese voice acting is way better though
shareAgreed, they should discontinue english dubs
shareBecause if you don't prefer them, no one else should have the option?

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Agreed. In some cases, the English dub is better than the original. Okay, before you kill me. When I say "In some cases" I really mean in one case. Trigun. Cowboy Bebop can go either way. I haven't watched the original Full Metal Alchemist in sub form, but I do like the dub version.
shareI can't comprehend how people can stand Japanese anime voice acting. So squeaky, stilted and over acted. English dubs aren't always great but almost always better than the Japanese.

How is it better if you don't understand what they're saying? It's a cartoon, anyway. The characters are drawn, they're not really talking so what difference does it make?

I said it was a cartoon and that the pictures aren't talking. I would rather understand the actors. I don't know if a voice actor speaking Japanese is any good since I don't speak Japanese.

Glad to see that. The only time I prefer dubs is when subs are bad (original Ronal the Barbarian for example) or hard to see (too small, not visible against the movie, etc). This isn't the case with Knights of Sidonia but I've seen it before and have had a hard time finding a dubbed version or a version with better subs.
I think you are being very stereotypical. I have gone through life with dyslexia which effects both reading and writing to a degree. Although able to read very fell and do not lack understanding, I do not read as fast as most. This means when it comes down to subs I can encounter trouble when trying to keep up. Dubbed in this retrospect is well suited to myself and those who seffer similar ailments. So I do not agree that Dubbed movies and series are for children.
This is not to say the orignal point is invalid, Original audio in animie is usually full of passion and emotion which can be lost rather quickly when dubbed.
I think it comes down to personal preference, if while watching subs I use all my focus keeping up with what is being said I is easy to lose sight of the happens.
I would say, if you can devide your focus equally when go for subs as its a more intense watch.
:D
none the less, Loved the series!
In some particually cases, like yours. But here, in Brazil, the great audience (most of the people) preferes to watch movies or cartoons dubbed. You know Why? Because they don't have the habit of lecture, they don't read. That's the reason that I said that dubbed movies, anime or cartoons are for children, or lazy adults.
May the force be with you!
I generally would rather watch dubbed Anime and Chinese films.
I like to watch the screen and cinematography rather than one line on the bottom.
That speaks volume about your reading skills. Because there's absolutely no reason why you can't do both. As someone who's been watching subs on movies since being a child I can tell you that you don't even notice that you're reading the subs. It happens subconciously. You don't miss out on anything happening on the screen just because you're reading the subs.
I would suggest reading books, it will increase your capacity to read effectively.
And I can tell you that you DO notice that you're reading the subs. I love reading books, it allows more variety in thing imo, but when I watch a show I'd rather focus on the visuals, since that's why it's made into a show in the first place genius, rather then spend half my time on reading and staying with what they're saying as well as watch what's going on, all while having to listen to them speak in a language that I absolutely don't understand, and imo often times sounds angrier then what the subs suggest.
Most important thing you should notice that I've said is imo, which is subject to change for every other person, so if you like subtitles that's great, it really is, but don't bash on those of us who prefer hearing our native tongue while watching a show.
Coming from an artistic background, me being a 2D/3D animator, I can't agree that dubs suck. They are essential for me to be immersed in the movie and not be constantly distracted by subtitles. This is an art form that has thousands of man hours put into it. It's eye candy at it's finest. Why mess with that with english subtitles all the time? Far better to have some mistranslations and misinterpretations than having to put up with subs and hearing a foreign language.
shareI only watch English dubs, I can't understand jap and I'd rather enjoy the scenes and details instead of reading. The subtitles can't portray emotion.
And the Japanese language is harsh to listen for someone not from there.
The English dub sounds way better and smoother, the voices are pleasant and deeper smoother than staccato punchy stereotypical Japanese yelling
And jap may hate yank animes with our language subbed in Japanese they'd rather hear it in Nipponese anyhow

I agree about dubs -- I only watch sub if i HAVE to, like right now that’s the only way I can see Terror in Resonance. (Though a dub comes out in January apparently.)
I love foreign movie, I’m a writer, so I’m not illiterate, haha. Maybe a little lazy. But it is as the guy above says, it’s animation. In live action films, dubs are TERRIBLE. It just looks goofy. But in animation, what’s the big f’n deal?
Granted some of the dialogue is Americanized and is just as bad. Changes intent. But that’s a bad ADAPTATION, not the whole forum of dubbing. I’m hard of hearing, so even with dubs I keep the titles on, and I see the differences in dialogue script. Often very different in the small changes.
And yes, I have seen a few anime where I cannot imagine the Japanese version being better than the American dub, particularly Black Butler. The Sebastian character. No way the American version is not the gold standard there.
Also most anime dialogue is way too fast to follow.

Pretty much all the companies that dub animes need to be put out of business. They don't know what they're doing. Hellsing had decent dubbing. Can't think of much else.
