Great fun, but the ending blew it.

A FPS put to film, complete with videogame level dialogue, voice acting and familiar tropes. Loved it.

However...

In these types of games, the hero always manages to pull a win out of his ass at the last second and defeat the villain/monster. On rare occasions he dies in the process, providing a bittersweet ending, but the victory is still there.

H.I. went totally off the tracks in the final reel. The monster won. I can live with the disembodied voice remaining "safe," as he could be used for a sequel, but to fit with a story-driven FPS the monster needed to be defeated, the voice's localized grand master plan ruined, and the hero saved to fight another day. Throw in a few "I'll have my revenge!" comments from the voice before the credits roll and baby, you'd have had yourself a winner. I'd go out and buy that blu-ray. As it stands, though, I was left feeling disappointed in the end. Sort of a "meh," reach for the remote kinda attitude.

I suppose it's possible the sequel could "fix" that, if it picked up immediately from the first, and like the old serials showed us the hero miraculously surviving that final attack, then gaining the upper hand. If that happened, I'd hope to see a quick resolution to the current scenario so he could change locations (perhaps a race through Chicago's supernatural underbelly to save his girlfriend --that would make a great sequel) and face new, if ultimately related, threats.

I wouldn't just like that, I'd buy it!
