Was there any significance of the flashback scene where Anna was holding a doll that strikingly resembled Marnie?

Perhaps a visual clue breaking any speculation that Anna and Marnie shared something romantic? That it was only platonic and innocent, similar to how a girl would love her doll?

All I got from it was that it showed there was a connection between the characters that went back to her childhood which is of course confirmed later
