I'm a Christian and....

This was way over the top! I thought it was a pretty good story but come on.... It was ruined by the heavy handed Christian/God theme. I have seen many Christian movies on UPN and TBN but this one was just too much for me. I kept waiting for it to be toned down some but it got progressively worse. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a Christian basher, I actually enjoy almost all their movies. They are wholesome and family friendly which you don't see much of these days. This one however was just god awful.

Let me just finish by saying that being a Christian is not being able to rattle off bible verses and proclaim "praise God" or "praise Jesus" at the slightest inclination. It's much much more than that and unfortunately several of the main characters didn't portray their faith in a very good light. At one point, I thought I was watching a cult and hoping they would drink the cool aide.

Have you ever heard of a spoof? As a Christian I have no problems with this movie. This isn't the first thing where Christians are depicted like this. If anything, there are different depictions of Christians in this movie. One where they are that suburban always happy, quoting scripture and saying Praise Jesus at the drop of the hat, on the other hand you have the more under cover Christians. Those that don't feel the need to be so in your face about it, in an almost cliche/naive kind of way.

This movie is about a journey if discovery. This woman grew up in church but felt she didn't need to continue on like many people) when she got older). Then one day she got tired of the losers she was dating and decided to try something else for a change. That's when she joined christianmingle.com and after meeting a guy she really liked, the truth came out. She began to fall and hit rock bottom and that's when she found God.

In a way, God was stripping her (read Stripped by Lina Abujamra) in order for her to come around and find Him.

This movie take a whole other level if you don't focus on the cliche depiction of Christians, but instead, look at what's really going on.

What's really going on is that the movie is a long commercial for a dating website.

Yes, it's always a good model for an institution to rely on the fragile and and the downtrodden to be their pray and lifeblood. Don't bother actually fixing the systemic problems that cause poverty and class abuse, just feed them Big Religion in mass to trick them into thinking that if they're slaves for the aristocracy and follow what you say, they'll go to heaven and be happy.

Ever notice that most aristocrats aren't the super cult-y religious ones. It's usually unskilled and uneducated labor.

This was not a spoof. It was just poorly written and poorly acted (not on purpose, you know, like a spoof!).

Christian dating sites? If I want to meet a bunch of desperately lonely Christians, I'll go to a gun show.

Anyone can be Christian, you believe in Jesus as your saviour? You're Christian. But how many walk the path and try to live the life Jesus wants for you. This movie captioned it perfectly what it means to be living right by God. It's not just about memorizing bible verses ofc but if you don't study the bible and feed your soul with the word of God then how will you know what God wants from you? I congregate weekly and people there do quote the bible. I've tried but I have bad memory it doesn't make me less than Christian. Being Christian isn't just about congregating either and the movie shows it by having them do good charitable deeds. In the end she ends up in Mexico I didn't understand if she moved there leaving her whole life behind felt a bit much but everyone has their own calling and she was happy. My point is for you too say it's too preachy and Christian makes me question what kind you are. With that said, some of the members seemed snobby which is also realistic to true life because you won't always meet perfect people even in a church. I been to bible studies and from outsiders perspective it seems like a cult but by definition what is a cult? Any group with the same mindset who share similar goals and ideals get together. Any group can be a cult. You don't speak for all Christians when you say it's too preachy like as if talking too much about God is a bad thing.

reply

With 'religion' in mind, a cult is exclusionary whereas God is expansive. God says whosoever believes. Cults say do and believe as we do, usually the focus of adoration is an object, or worse, a mere mortal. Cheers. Probably going to pass on Christian Mingle. Then again, it's Netflix. What's to lose?

You know what Carl Sagan says, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." I can tell you that 1,000 panda bears are going to fly away into the night and bring you eternal happiness if you give me $10,000 but that doesn't make it so. For your claims to have validity, you need physical evidence and for the claims to be fact checked and verified. There's no reason to "believe" anything, you should "know" something. And you can't "know" something without "evidence."

I don't get why these movies make Christians out to seem so cartoonishly out-of-touch or just strange when it's presumably meant for a Christian and/or conservative audience.
If it was an ultra-conservative sect, that'd be one thing. But most of them are far more down-to-earth than the robots these ostensibly 'religious' romantic-comedy movies always portray.
