I appreciate the purpose behind this movie...

But I just watched the trailer, and honestly the plot just seems like another rehash of "The Thing", only at sea. I wish the plot was more original, honestly. I was slightly disappointed when I got done with the trailer because the premise of the making of this movie really intrigued me. I really do appreciate that they're using practical effects for their monsters, and not CGI. it's cool that the company behind this movie is kind of giving the middle finger to the studio behind the Thing remake/reboot/prequel, which replaced all of their hard work on practical effects with too much CG, by using no CG at all on their creatures. I'll still go and see it, though, but it'll be purely for the practical effects.

Honestly, who cares if it's exactly like The Thing? I would go to this movie even if it was an exact copy of The Thing. In fact, I want it to be as similar to The Thing as possible.

But isn't that what we have the John Carpenter film for? If I wanted to watch The Thing, I'll go watch his version. I'm just disappointed the plot isn't more original. I still want to see it though.

It probably won't be exactly like it. Even if the plots are identical the atmosphere, the characters, etc, could be quite different, resulting in a completely different feeling movie.

To be honest I've been waiting for a proper remake of the thing for a while but with a better budget and special effects (CGI or practical I just want better). I'm actually wanting a real remake of the Alien franchise considering how damaged it is now.

I sort of agree with jordanmccune but only on the part of who cares if it seems like the thing. It's no big deal if things play out well -no pun intended.
But everybody has the right to voice their opinion. My only complaint is just wanting to know when it's going to be released.I don't understand how these guys could find the funding to get the movie made and edited but yet, no companies haven't picked it up for distributiion yet but then again, I know nothing about the business.

If it was an imitation...a perfect imitation, how would you know if it was really The Thing?

You do realize that The Thing was simply a rehash of The Thing from Another World, right?

Actually The Thing was a movie adaptation for the novella "Who Goes There?" and it's actually quite accurate. The Novella is horrifying and Carpenter did it justice and then some.

reply

Have you seen The Thing from Another World? It's not all that similar to The Thing.

This movie is an hommage to the best 80's monster movies.

reply

An homage that sucks blue whale balls, unfortunately. I really, REALLY wanted this flick to be all kinds of awesome, I even chipped in some coin in the kickstarter, but the result is underwhelming at best, mr.Gillis should have concentrated all his efforts on the effects and leave the writing and directing to a pro. The whole genesis and purpose of this flick was to wow us with the practical effects and it failed embarrassingly after promising so much. The only redeeming thing about this train wreck was old salty Lance.

I agree it looks & feels like old-school 80's horror. While not a top-notch film, it holds attention and the actors do okay with a shallow script. It's far-and-away superior to anything on SYFY and has a better feel than these new 'millenial' selfie-video driven flicks that are all about narcissistic kids and their sarcasm.

I jumped a few times, and a few times I didn't want to see what was going to happen next. The flick did it's job competently. Too bad all the initial story elements were a mess.

I, too, appreciated the purpose behind this movie.

Finally saw it this weekend.

Still appreciate the purpose behind it, but it needed a better script and more money. It felt incomplete and devoid of pretty much all movie magic.

It was just some stuff that happened. Practical stuff, which is great, but just stuff from a story standpoint.
