Dog scene...so stupid

I really enjoyed the movie and thought parts were excellent but the scene where the girl snapped the dogs neck was so unnecessary and damn right stupid. It had been swung around in her bag all movie without a sound so why not put it back inside where it had been quiet? Had it still cried why not put it outside the car and tell it to schoo?

It made no sense at all.
