Why did the German officer...Spoilers

Why did he not shoot in the end when the Americans where escaping in the Jeep? Was it because he thought it was not worth the effort to have to accomodate some POW's or was it because he remembered how kind the nurse had been and how Lewis didn't want to execute the German POW's?

Exactly, that's what I think. He had come to see them as people, not the enemy. I think he was trying to connect with the nurse Nancy early on to further his cause (possible use it to his advantage later), but she truly was kind to him, giving him water, etc. And he probably did care about her some. It's clear he's unhappy that the head officer is ordering an execution at the end, but he feels powerless to stop it. He looks right in the nurse's eyes after he translates that it's to be an execution. And yeah, likewise, Lewis couldn't execute him in the woods. Pay it forward, I guess.

Well said. Also, it was Autumn 1944 and Dittrich saw the proverbial writing on the wall for Germany.
