All the posts about the ending seem to fail to understand the significance of the volcanic eruption. It killed them, probably moments after roll credits. She loved him and chose mortality, only to see them both killed together right afterward. Poetic.

Also, she didn't "choose" mortality. She straight up says she has no choice in the matter and has no say what her body and hormones do. She doesn't know if she is in love until the last shot, when she realizes she's human.

Oh well.
That's NOT what The Volcano represented... It's a parallel, no doubt... But not in that sense
