Paternity suite against the military

Did anyone understand this part of the movie? How was the mom able to file a paternity suite for child support against the US government? And if the mom had no idea who Jack Reacher was, why was he named as the father?

reply

There was no paternity suit

Fighting a religious war is like fighting over whose imaginary friend is better.

reply

Yes there was, that's why Jack and Samantha were so sad at the end - because he didn't recognize Samantha's mother and so couldn't be her father. And don't forget he learned about the paternity suite from the attorney, and they tried to kill Samantha (for reasons never explained), so it's not like the whole thing was some kind of set up. My best guess is that it's just a plot hole that the lazy writers and producers couldn't be bothered to correct.

reply

That's not remotely a "Plot Hole"; the Atty explained to Reacher early in the film that lots of women do that to try to get money; since the bad guys studied everything available on Reacher, they saw a possible vulnerability (ie, possible daughter), which was why they were also after the girl.

reply

It's a massive plot hole, because there's no rational reason why Samantha's mother would have filed it against a soldier she didn't even know. How exactly does she plan to get all this money when a simple DNA test will disprove that he's the father? How did she even get Reacher's name? Pick it out of a phone book? It makes zero sense.

They also distinctly say twice that it is filed against the 'military', as opposed to Reacher personally, which leaves another huge question - how can you file a paternity suit against the military?

reply

At first I thought the suit was made-up to discredit Reacher but then that would make less sense. The whole thing was poorly written.

You are right, it was never really explained why the girl was so important (especially that scene where Reacher tells the bad guys she's in the wind if they hurt him).

reply

In the book, the paternity suit IS made up to, along with the murder charge, make Reacher run and give up on helping Turner. The girl is fairly unimportant and a minor character.

Fighting a religious war is like fighting over whose imaginary friend is better.

reply

Did you watch the movie?

reply

Reacher said that Turner would be in the wind, not Sam

reply

Heroin addicts might try less reasonable things in desperate need of money. So, no, not really a plot hole. No top notch writing, either.

reply

But no one in the movie was a heroin addict. If you have to make up theories completely disconnected from the content of the movie to explain something then it is a plot hole. I shouldn't have to make up bizarre explanations for glaring gaps in information.

reply

Except it's spelled out clearly, you might wanna pay attention next time. You're wrong, the ppl responding to you above are entirely right, get over it. Enough said.

reply

Okay, where was is spelled out clearly? Seriously, where in the movie is this explained?

reply

When he meets the girl first time, he asks her about her mom and she thinks he's a narc. and when he asks her if she knew a lot of narcs she says that her mom's not into doing that stuff anymore.
Clear enough for me, anyways, you not getting it might be your prob.

reply

??????? How does that explain why she chose Reacher of all people as the subject for a fake paternity suit?

reply

Right, there's no flashback, cutaway or sth., you might consider that lazy writing. Kind of self-explainining, though, we do know where babies come from, don't we. :)

reply

Nobody said it does, you just changed the subject after I proved you wrong about the Mom's "completely made up" drug past.

And yes, why she chose him is not explained, big deal. That's a mere technicality, this movie has other issues. I always enjoy TC, personally thought the first JR was way better though.

Exactly.

reply

It was explained in the book, but not in the movie. Silly of them to leave it out.

reply

Yeah I found this bizarre. Especially since Reacher had no idea who this girl's mom was. At the very least it should have been something like Reacher at least did know the mom and dated her at one point, but wasn't the father.

I mean how many men find themselves in a paternity suit out of the blue with someone they don't even know?

reply

At first it seemed like a conspiracy to discredit Reacher.
