Seriously?

Either this is just a straight rip off of the karate kid, in which case everyone who participated in creating the idea for this film are all idiots. Or it's a remake of the karate kid, in which case whoever came up with that name should be blacklisted from ever working creative jobs for the rest of their life.

Jesus, considering NEITHER the original Karate Kid nor the remake ACTUALLY FEATURED KARATE -- meaning the title was moronic and -- the title of this low-budget DTV time-waster is frankly more acceptable in a broad way, and should be of little consequence to anyone, really. Seriously . . .

It's still horrible

Not a ripoff or a remake. Those have already been done. There is no Miyagi character here or any fluff martial arts. This film is meant to be much more realistic with lessons at a dojo in a class. The "kid" here does not compete in a tournament at all. And certainly doesn't defeat the best black belts in his division after a few months of training. So you needn't worry. The martial arts is much more realistic, the teachers are "real life" martial arts champions & legends, and the matter of family importance and the subject of bullying is taken more seriously too. You will enjoy it.

Since this film was voted as "one of the Top 6 Action Family Films" by the DOVE Foundation, I think the idea that it is a "rip off" or "remake" is ridiculous. The name "The Martial Arts Kid" is appropriate because the Producers wanted to include all of the arts and not just one style ie, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Karate, etc. So, as far as "real" martial artists are concerned, it is "politically correct". Chinese fans did not appreciate the Jackie Chan remake of "The Karate Kid" because there was no "Karate"....it was Kung Fu! The strong Anti Bullying theme along with the current trends in "MMA" brought a different storyline than the "bad teacher" theme in the original. It has similarities with the original "Karate Kid" but by utilizing "Real World" Martial Arts Masters, teachers, etc. the Producers added a realism unseen in most film in the genre. Although, Jackie Chan is talented, we wouldn't know his name if he did not appear in films. However, many of the martial artists in "The Martial Arts Kid" are famous worldwide for their Martial Arts accomplishments and not for repeating "dialogue on film"! That is probably the main difference in the 2 films which precede it.
