The vents

Ok, so I spent a lot of the game scared in vents, but about halfway through I realised the alien never went in them (it had its own vents).

Then almost at the end I'm in a vent and whomph, I'm pulled backward to my death.

Was my alien glitched for not entering the vents, or does it only kill you in one vent in the game (not counting the DLC)?

Just curious.

It's random. While vents are usually safe, the alien can and will use them and will follow you into them if it sees you go in them.

Its either that its rare or something the alien is more likely to do later in the game. I've been killed inside the vents 4 times now in 2 playthroughs of the game, neither on hard or nightmare difficulty.

Once during the level with the broken elevator, there are 4-5 guys in the middle of the room and you crawl under the vents to get around them. I was in a corner of the vent, not visible through the grating above, going through my supplies and crafting items while the alien killed the men above. Next thing I know he's in there with me coming right at me.

In the later level where there are all the security guys with shotguns and you're using the vents to get around them I hear the alien outside so I stop, then I hear a weird sound I hadn't heard before, then there is the alien in the vent with me.

Another was on this same level during a different playthrough, different vent, but same level.

On another level there is a vent that takes you to a lone room, there are no ceiling vents, only way in or out of this room is the vent you use. I gathered up supplies, then re entered the vent only to find the alien waiting for me.

In none of these situations was I making noise or being visible to the alien from outside the vent.

Mine was just after the jump scare towards the end, when there is a sofa(?) in front of a door and the Alien leaps it in front of you. I went in a vent and suddenly I was going backward.

This is when I died in the vents, after resetting the generator.

Up until that point the vents were always safe. Definitely a freaky moments when it comes in.

No, it is not a glitch. I also saw the alien only a few times in the vents but it would find me if i walked too fast when I heard it above, or if I tried to shoot out of the whol (at other enemies). Also if you run away from it and manage to have enough time to get into the hole it will appear.
I suspect some vents are programmed to be alien free while others supposed to have it appear more.
I am sure you saw how the longer vents had the shafts going up where you could not go, that's from where I saw the alien appear.

(Finished on hard)

reply

Yeah if you're just trying to test out if the alien is in those upper vents he totally is, even in the earlier levels. I've gone into vents at the very beginning of level 6 and 7 and just fired off the pistol and he'll drop down from one of these shafts and come after you. Only time he won't is if it is a section of the game where the alien does not appear at all.

reply

Wait... U guys actually played this stinker that long to see a actual alien? Wow, respect. That takes determination. What did u do? Throw a flare at it?

reply

Flare only distracts it. To scare it off, you need to set it on fire as that is it's only phobia. So pipe bomb or molotov cocktail and he disappears into the vents again but only temporarily. I also don't use noise makers unless I am leading the Alien to hostile humans as after a while the Alien knows that it will be hit by a pipe bomb if it investigates the noise maker, mainly because the AI is designed to learn from interactions with you.

but it does use the vents in the walls, a lot with me, on both normal and hard!

this is why i never use the vents, or avoid the vents if i can.
i just don't know when it will go in one, and if it does, it's guaranteed death as far as i see it. my tactic in general is also to stick with the most basics (crouch mostly, 10% walk, hide behind things)and only use tools, special passages if necessary. this reduces the things the AI can learn about my playing style or my tools, so when i actually use weapons, special passages, i'm much more likely to succeed.

normally i just crouch through every place and with his poor eyesight, if i stay still he passes by me 90% of the time. of course if you're directly in his 12 then you're kinda *beep*

It is not a glitch. The alien can go in any of the vents that you can (provided it is an area the alien is able to be in per the story). It doesn't usually enter them because it prefers the ceiling vents but it does use the vents you use as a shortcut sometimes to stay near the ground on its own volition. If it sees you go in one it will definitely go after you.

I've always wondered plot wise. Why can't they just seal the damn vents!?
