I was a big fan of this series as a kid though I didn't own all the books. Some of the stories used in this movie were from some of the books I hadn't read. Specifically Harold and the Red Spot.

I thought it was really good too. It felt like a more mature movie than your typical pg13 movie these days. The acting was great..it was a little long but I saw this on no sleep. So I might not think it was too long had I seen it rested. I don't think anyone has to even had read the books to be able to get into this. I don't even remember the stories and I loved it.

Only real weakness was the ending and how they wrapped it up in a kind of Disney like ending. It would have been more faithful to the genre if the ending had been bleak instead of good triumphing over evil.

True...but then the last line by the girl was that she was going to get them back. I think it would have been better if they all ended up dead or missing.

I thought it was a Little weird that they killed the police chief in a jail escape (well, that is what it would look like to everyone) and no one seemed to care.

You're right, I had forgotten about the sheriff. Given they would have had arrest records of the two booked but no longer there the police the next day would have made them both public enemy number one in the state.
