"A United Kingdom" or "Loving"?

Given that both of these films are coming out around the same time and have some pretty obvious story similarities, which one do you think will be the better film?

My money is on Loving, easily. Jeff Nichols is one of my favorite directors. I'm curious to see A United Kingdom, but I've been looking forward to Loving for over a year, and I much prefer the more subdued tone it seems to be going for. This film looks like typical period piece Oscar bait while Loving looks like a much more realistic and honest account of the story. Plus, I'd much rather watch something about an average couple than a royalty, personally.

Either way, I'm glad to see that both of these films are coming out. May the alt-right shed many bitter tears over them.

Both are very good but Loving is superior.

If you are looking for "subdued", you will like Loving. I found it boring at times, and about 20 minutes too long. Thankfully the director was there for the Q&A after the screening to explain the film. He wanted to stay true to the Lovings story, their relationship. Their passion didn't "jump off the screen" like in A United Kingdom. It was subtle. I respect the director's ability to keep it "real", but I was underwhelmed with the film.

I loved A United Kingdom.

Agreed. It's turned out a better year for black films than I expected.

Whatever you are, be a good one.
