Seriously?

I'm a gymnastics fan. That said, the ONLY reason this movie gets made is because it's a black girl that won. Nastia Luikin did the same thing back in '08. And being that her family started out in Russia, moved here, etc etc, it would make a far more interesting movie than the typical "black girl goes through self doubt to make it to the top" movie that's been made 1,000 times already. Love the sport. Happy Gabby won the gold. Tired of hearing the "first black woman to win it" routine. Won't be watching this farce.

I love gymnastics too and I agree with you. She's a black gymnast. That's the reason the movie was made. She's a good a gymnast, but so are the other girls on the team. When I was in gymnastics, I worked with black and Asian teammates and race didn't matter. So why does this particular gymnast get a movie over her teammates? This movie doesn't need to exist. I used to be in gymnastics and we ALL go through self doubt and personal troubles. I too would rather see a film about Nastia Lukin too. She was just as good, if not better. This girl does not deserve a movie about her life. She hasn't done enough and she's only a teenager. There are many more athletes that deserve a movie over her.

Oh please spare me your racist hate. How many pointless movies have been made about whites, just because they are white? Natalie Holloway who was stupid to go off with a bunch of dudes in a foreign country. Jodi Ares, really? True stories about the antics of stupid white privileged teenagers, "Girl Fight" and "The Fab Five" those aren't pointless at all, and they have also been done a 1000 times.

Oh but the minute there is a movie starring a black girl, it's a problem. Oh this world...Then you wonder why blacks had to create their own station and their own awards show. If this movie was featuring a white Olympic winner, it wouldn't even be a discussion. There may have been others that are good or better and have done more, maybe. But being white with money they also didn't have to struggle as hard. So yes she does deserve a movie over many of them. I'm glad they made this because it shows the girl's trials and tribulations being black and in the the white world of gymnastics while dealing with people just like you.

And I would add to that--how many movies are made about white women and girls under 18 who brutally murder someone but are still show in a sympathetic light?

Yes, exactly!

You and the people I responded to are the ones that are ignorant. People like you shouldn't be allowed to breathe the same air as the rest other population.

I'm not even sure you can read considering your reply has a completely different meaning than what you were going for. So while trying to sound smart, you end up sounding like a fool. Now go and look up "reading comprehension" and come back after you've taken your own advice.

To me it's simply a matter of the fact that there is a The ____ Story" movie about a kid who is barely 18 years old now. Granted, the even that made her a household name occurred when she was 16, but for crying out loud, "The _____ Story" movies should be made at least a decade after the event.

I guess we should not be shocked when we now-a-days get real crime oriented TV movies before a trial takes place.

reply

I agree, my only issue is that it's too soon for a movie. I never understood the rush to make things into TV movies nowadays. I think a decade from now it will be a better film and I would even go as far as to say it will be a better big screen film if they wait longer then that.

Then don't watch, it's not like anyone is begging you to. There was also a tv movie about Oksana Baiul, who went to hell and back before winning the gold in figure skating back in 1994, and you don't hear anyone whining about that.

I hate to say it as well, but I agree. Not with the whole "because she's black" nonsense that the original poster was spouting about. But that it is way to soon for a movie about this individual. I mean how long did we have to wait for a movie about Ali and countless other great athletes that really went through serious hurdles to become great. I think that she is an amazing athlete but, I really don't think her story could be that interesting at this point in her life. So it seems pretty dam desperate for them to be making a movie about her at this time. I know Hollywood ran out of good idea a decade ago, but come on REALLY!?!?!?!?

She claims it happened at every single gym she's ever been in? The main gym she accused of being racist is the one that got her up to the level of being an Olympian. Ohhhh the racism.

YOU obviously have a race problem, as every post you've made, you've been out to show who you think is racist. Works both ways. Whites aren't the only racists on the planet.

reply

[deleted]

I bet a million dollars that there will be racist whites in the movie.

Maybe it has something to do with racist white people in society, specifically in athletic competition dominated by whites?

Oh wait, I forgot. Black people are the real racists, because of movies like the Gabby Douglas story.

What is she 18 now, how do you do a store about someone who is young enough to be my daughter, the store was not all that great.

reply

First African American woman to win individual all around, the first non-white individual in any nation to win this. She is the first American to win the team and individual all around.

But, hey, yeah... that's nothing.

reply

Why the hell didn't bigots like yourself make these comments when movies about Nancy Kerrigan or Greg Louganis were made?! Oh, obviously, because those people are white, and if they're white, it's alright.

I think more has to do with the fact that Gabby is first african american win all round. Geez I thought someone who is fan of gymnastics would know that

not to mention, it is the movie business, the story has to be capitalized on while it is still fresh. Americans have a short memory

^^^This^^^ I find it to be quite an inspirational story. I enjoyed watching it and the "Behind the Headlines" that aired after the movie.
