Biggest Oscar Snub of 2019. Amazed this not get any nominations at all

It was not only a very good and sweet movie, but also had a great oerformance from Reily and the make up and custom design was great too.

In a year when Bohmeian Rhapsody was nominated for Best Movie, surely the rather better Stan and Ollie, about two Hollywood greats was the better biographical movie.

Even the best movie winner, Green Book, was just a very simplistic, rather gentle movie about male friendship, which again Stan and Ollie did better.

Don't agree on your comparison to Green Book, which I thought was a much stronger film. I enjoyed Stan & Ollie, but felt the film was too light, and lacked a punch. It's a good movie that was perhaps too light for it's own good. Green Book deservedly won best picture because it come of as stronger on almost every level.

For example, take the period detail. I felt Green Book transported me back to the 60's, while Stan & Ollie felt like green screen and like they didn't pay enough attention to get it totally believable. It lacked a bit more passion from the filmmakers. Still a good movie, though. Just not good enough for awards consideration.

I agree. I suspect it is because it came out so close to Oscar time and there was no big budget to promote it. Perhaps also because it's such a low key, gentle and particularly British film and didn't get a lot of business outside the UK?

reply

It was recognized by BAFTA.

The worst snub: makeup. There were ONLY 3 nominations in that category!!! They couldn't have "squeezed" in ONE more??? John C Reilly's makeup was absolutely incredible! I was so pissed when I saw the nominations!

The Academy Awards have had no credibility for years and years. The fact that this move was snubbed is almost a compliment.

reply

Probably would have gotten consideration, but I doubt enough people in America even saw it. Which is such a shame.
