Congratulations Fox! A well deserved Award.

I knew this movie was bad, but not this bad... Ha, ha, ha...

I enjoyed the film, it certainly wasn't bad IMHO. It also shows you how subjective movie criticism is.

The most respected movie reviewer AFAIK, Roger Ebert, gave The Phantom Menace 3 1/2 stars, which I thought was one of the worst films I've ever sit through in a movie theater (slightly edged out by the even worse Attack of the Clones).

He gave the original Blade Runner 3 stars, A Clockwork Orange 2 stars, Donnie Darko 2 1/2 stars, Dead Poets Society 2 stars, Fight Club 2 stars, Reservoir Dogs 2 1/2 stars, Full Metal Jacket 2 1/2 stars, Blue Velvet 1 star, Harold and Maude 1 1/2 stars, Leon: The Professional 2 1/2 stars.

So all of those films, which are widely considered excellent films, are, according to Ebert, not as good as The Phantom Menace.

I'm not too concerned about critics but from what I've seen of Ebert over the years, I've often wondered why he was considered the end-all to be-all of movie critics.

reply

Roger Ebert seemed to understand films at a deep level and provide interesting insights OR sometimes write a review that made it seem he didn't even see the movie!

reply

Ebert definitely could nail the "why" a movie is good or not. He was much better than Siskel, who seemed to look for mostly the negative in a movie. RIP to both of them.

X-Men: Apocalypse was a crushing disappointment. But to rank it the worst film of the year is a vast exaggeration. I'm sure if I think about it for just 2 minutes I could come up with at least 20 worse films from 2016.

There were parts of Apocalypse that were watchable, it had a few good elements: The Quicksilver and Wolverine sequences springing to mind. Independence Day: Resurgence however was unengaging, visual noise from start to finish. I can't think of one positive thing to say about it at all while Zoolander 2 was one almighty cringe.

People have a tendency to go over the top when it comes to disappointing films and lose all perspective. Is the film really a more traumatic experience than the likes of Ride Along 2 or Dad's Army?

reply

I think when you have expectations that aren't met be even the slightest it can definitely change your perspective. I considered it the worst movie I saw that year because I expected it to be halfway decent at the slightest with such a huge budget and coming off of the last couple of movies. It made Wolverine: Origins look good.

Every film should be judged on it's own merits regardless of expectations, the filmmakers reputation, etc, etc.

A new Scorsese film comes out, it should be judged against all of cinema not the rest of his output. Otherwise it's unfair to the film and the people that made it. It's important to be objective.

Wolverine: Origins was an absolutely diabolical film. And I'm saying this as someone who kind of enjoyed it at the time because, hey, it was a solo Wolverine film. But I could be objective and see that it was absolutely horrifically made. The effects were cheap. The CGI on his claws looked like a joke. This was something they had hitherto been perfectly fine. The editing was horrendous. Deadpool was an insult. There was nothing positive to say about the film at all.

Apocalypse did have some good stuff mixed in with the bad.

Couldn't disagree more. You're saying I should go into X-Men with the same expectation I should go into a Uwe Boll movie then. I shouldn't go into Star Wars expecting a space opera? No matter what, when you go into a movie you have expectations set, especially when it comes to an established brand.

reply

I'm not saying that at all. Of course you're going to have expectations. But you shouldn't penalize or reward a film more because of an emotion that you are bringing to the film.

If Scorsese brings out a new film and it's not as good as his usual standard you shouldn't say "Well, that was worse than Batman and Robin."

Additionally, if filmmakers do get some things right in a fairly bad film then they should get credit for the things they do get right as well as being chastised for what they got wrong. How else are they gonna learn?

I like this movie and anyone and if anyone doesn't like that, they can suck a bag of rocks!
