"This isn't real, that's not Amy" wait whaaaaattttt?

"This isn't real, that's not Amy....." says Matt to Ethan about how he is holding a glass to Darcy's throat. If you're not good with names, I mean the part when the cop-dad saying those words to the Black man, and new-love of cop-dad's wife.

I had to rewind that a few times because I didn't trust the evidence that my own eyes or ears were collecting. I've seen some dumb movies assembled from dumb parts and I have seen some hugely stupid things go down in otherwise decent movies. But usually in a movie that is taking itself pretty seriously otherwise, it's unusual to see something so far out that you need to rewind the thing to grasp what exactly is happening. Saying to yourself, "there is no way that is what they meant to do here". I mean there is usually a scale. Dumb parts are at least usually discernible as the plot elements that they are. This was so off scale that I questioned whether or not I got it right. I still don't feel totally confident that I got it right.

I mean are we truly supposed to believe a newly zombified Ethan was confused to the point that he believed that Darcy was somehow now Amy? And that he also believed, in his zombie-addled brain that she didn't love him like she loves (still loves) her ex? Calling *beep* on that one. Did they consult with anyone who actually has been through a divorce in the making of it?

I'm not sure yet if this movie is good or bad. I do know that it is enormously unaware of its own stupidity at times, I think the term is non-self-aware. I think almost every movie suffers from being a little bit dumb, just by nature of a movie as a piece of fiction. But THIS movie really needed more self-awareness than the average film and this was the part of the movie where I came the closest to shutting it off.

Did that strike anyone else as crazy to the point that they actually had to rewind and double check?

In the dullness of this movie that made some sense. The old lady said the dolls intensify your fears. It was kind of clear that Ethan was uncomfortable with the husband as he was the new 'father'. At the beginning, Amy told the ex that he was not supposed to come around without calling. So what the doll did to Ethan was intensify his fear that Amy didn't love him and he would never fit in with the family. As for why he mistook the cop for Amy I could only think of one thing: all blonde white women look alike.
