Whoever said it was "Monsters Inc" for adults really nailed it.

In the beginning, the Demons live by feeding off of fear, and anger, and hatred. That's why they live in the tenement - to feast on the misery of the people that live there.

The shadow / Sara is a being that was looking for a way to change things. It found Vine - a demon who seemed to have feelings, who cared. Vine was about to "evolve" into an interpreter, which I guess was a big step up and would cement him into the demon world.

But he cared, and then he saved Sara from the molester, which set the demon world on its head. Suddenly all the humans in the building were happy and content and well-adjusted, and the demons were starving. Finally it came down to Sara - could Vine kill Sara to save all the demons? And when he had to choose, he couldn't.

The red bird / Sara with red wings were all like a momentary vision where the shadow talked to Vine and explained why everything happened. Then it was made clear that the whole movie took place in the moments after Vine encountered Sara. His saving her happened in the dream, while in reality the molester killed her. To the Shadow that was reality and it didn't see any reason why things should be different.

So Vine broke down and begged to have everything back. The Shadow shrugged and put Vine back at that moment. Given the second chance, Vine saved Sara, reassured her, then fed on the torment of the molester as Vine killed him (the stew we see at the very end). And we see that it looks like the demons are learning to feed on those who would do evil instead of the misery of everyday people.

Or in Monsters, Inc terms - they learned to feed on actions that brought happiness instead of screams.
