Did Nicholas Really Make Everything In His Portfolio?

Does anyone find Anya's accusation that Nicholas had some help with his portfolio credible? At first I thought it was ridiculous of her to say that but when I saw how he reacted it made me think that maybe there's some truth there. If someone accused me of fraud and questioned my integrity on national television I'd be insulted and angry. An artist lives and dies by their reputation. He didn't defend his work or honor at all really. Maybe the producers and editors edited his reaction to pump up the drama. That's always a possibility. I'm sure casting does extensive research on the cast to make sure they are who they say they are... at least I hope they do.

Depending on my mood I would either fight and defend my work. Or figure she's a one note hack and not worry about what she says.

it was amusing that she, of all people, was the one asking that question. I liked Nicholas and halfway through the episode I was wishing he could switch mentors. but alas.

The same exact thought crossed my mind when she asked him. I still think she (Anya) shouldn't have won her season... shouldn't have made it into the top 3 at all. I'm still confused about why and how she ended up winning.

I think it is totally irresponsible to decide someone's fault by how you expect people to react.

You are absolutely right.

I don't really know. I think it's too bad that he didn't defend himself more vigorously, because now he's left doubt in everyone's minds. His demeanor though has been very flat, even before being asked this question, so maybe the stress of the show is simply too much for him, and he shuts down?

I think Nicholas was too demoralized by that point and was also probably incredulous that Anya would even ask that question. After all, the stuff in that portfolio likely took weeks to conceptualize, design, and execute, and UtG was asking him to produce in 1 or 2 days and on assigned themes.

And for that matter, Anya actually admitted during her Project Runway audition that she had others execute her designs, so it's a strong case of "pot calling" at work.

I'd like to be a pessimist, but this is a luxury I cannot afford.

Exactly. This.

I found it credible but only because I saw his portfolio on lifetime.com and thought it was 100x better than anything he made the whole season. Maybe Nicholas is just a really slow worker so the time constraints really limited him but it's not like he didn't know what he signed up for. There just wasn't a single piece he made on the show that was even comparable to his portfolio.. so in midst of that stark contrast, I think it is appropriate to wonder where his creativity and powerful aesthetic went.. and if perhaps other mentors or designers had a creative hand in his work. But as for the timing of the question when Nicholas was in a crisis? I'm not sure about how 'motivating' it is..

reply

Exactly! After her judgment of Nick as a mentor, she berates her teammate when he's clearly stressed out.

Well, these shows aren't necessarily about who is actually a good designer. They're more about who is a good designer, that works well in this pressurized environment WITH the given themes/assignments. So someone who is a fantastic designer might fail miserable at this show, because of the time pressure or being uninspired by a theme.
Kinda like how Chopped isn't necessarily a good cooking competition because there's always snails or pig knuckles or a cow tail in the basket.

I think that was unbelievable. She had some gall pulling that. Don't know if you ever had a mentor, but that is shameful what she did. It made it seem like all she cared about was her own prize.

Awful. (I liked Anya's personality in her season, though.)
