Black Canadians

In the scene when David and Jabrielle go into the Tanning salon to rob it. The woman says something to the effect of "African Americans are welcome here" Jabrielle corrects her, saying "I'm Canadian" My question is: Why would the assumption be that a black person is from the United States. I realize it takes place in Toronto and it is about an hour from the boarder.

reply

Because an African AMERICAN can't be Canadian. It's about geography, not race.

reply

Yes, that, and the (sad) fact that "African American" has entered the Canadian lexicon often to refer to Afro-Canadians, likely due to the cultural dominance of our American neighbour. Her response to the clerk is a refutation of that.

reply

Last I checked Canada is in North America.
