Why was he only in a little bit of this? Was it an intentional joke about how brief his Doctor Who screentime was?

Apparently they wanted him to have a bigger role but he was busy doing a play in Dublin.

I think that it is an intended in-joke: McGann agrees to take part, "work permitting"; but of course work does not permit as he _is_ in the "official" 50th schedule in "The Night of the Doctor".

I think McGann dropped out once he knew he was going to be reprising his role as the Doctor.

It's that man again!!
