In the original manga Takumi is a twenty something high school student, ex-bosozoku (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C5%8Ds%C5%8Dzoku) turned otaku. As such, also he had to join the death games, but got away with them somehow. He notices the death games have much to do with a doujinshi he was given by Kamimaro (in the movie that homeless guy, the god) and rushes out of home with the said doujinshi (this scene is depicted in the movie) to go to see the commentator of the news show to show him the doujinshi.
Reportedly Nao Omori, who played Takumi, was puzzled when Miike told him the role that he would be playing was around 23-year-old high school student cause he was 42 years old.lol
