I appreciated the effort and the intention of the film. I get tired of 'hood' movies and sociological "woe is us" projects. This at least attempted to show that there are many ordinary black people living with family issues that are not just rooted in racism, ignorance, poverty and criminal behavior.

For me, the script was weak, but then, it is tv and there's not a lot of room for creative license. A writer has to honor the 'cramped' form and at the same time try to keep it fresh.

There was just too much conflict and most of it cliche. We've seen this before. But there was a lot of great talent in the film and they played it honestly.

I thought the very last part with the mother going into the light was 'cheesy.' And it defeated the best part of the film, the reading of the letters which did bring tears to my eyes.

For some reason, I would have preferred them read those letters before she died. It would have been different, but I think it would have had a more real dramatic dynamic. Just a thought.

But I hate to slam it outright because I really need more films with this intention.

But I know where you're coming from.

^^^This. Every single character had these over-the-top problems. It was a bit much. I think the movie would have sold itself much better had the issues been a bit less theatrical.
