Ending (spoiler)

So we see him go to a hotel room and kiss his ring but he doesn't remove it this time. Was that supposed to be an open ending in that he's seeing his wife and not a hokker?

reply

That's what i cam here to talk about.

I actually was trying to call it in the final seconds,

Whose at the door,

Young girl
his wife
ambiguous

I likes that the director went ambiguous to screw with you, and minutes earlier he had the conversation with Dreyfuss, who basically said "i want to talk about your hooker issue." gives him a ton of money, then also says to get clean, but ease your way into it.

"I wouldn't worry too much about Ethics reform right now."

So , does he still have the issue and he's gotten craftier. Has he straightened up.

Didn't they say in the limo, that his wife was out of town??

reply

1. I wasn't sure why Dreyfuss handed him that envelope, hmmm.
2. The Ethics reform remark, I think, was advice for him to stop preaching morality when he was addicted to hookers.
3. They did say in the limo that his wife wouldn't be in for one event but would be for antoher, leading us to beleive she was currently not in town, but she just may have been and they were speaking about future dates.

So what do you think?
I think it was the wife because he kissed the ring and did not take it off.

reply

i did think it was the wife as well.

the envelope were donations from constituents i think.

reply

I think he's come to terms with that once a cheater always a cheater kinda thing & basically that he has an addiction - removing his wedding ring makes no difference anymore as he continues with his infidelity and i guess he's become accustomed to his actions. Not to mention that his marriage is already broken.

I dont know if i explained it good enough hahah. But that's my interpretation lol. I also agree, it's ambiguous so i guess it's up to the viewer :)

reply

I totally thought he was meeting another woman. Period. Because he got away with it he wasn't going to stop. And because he was already starting To get campaign donations he was feeling very confident.

reply

Yeah, he was meeting another woman lol, i agree. I meant as to why he didnt take off his wedding ring lol.

reply

very interesting Sybil11

I never thought of it that way.

Even reflecting back on the conversation with Dreyfuss.

He says that "if all the politics were faithful, washington would be filled with p whipped momma's boys."

Kinda like saying - "look have you fun but don't let it get out of control and make sure to bring it during game time."

reply

I agree with sybil11. I also think if the movie had continued he would have been brought down later by another journalist because he wasn't getting help for his addiction. When he responded "i can do two things at once" I felt like he was saying I'm above getting caught. And because it was out already, since the guy mentioned his "zipper" problem when he had a heart to heart, the dirty little secret probably wasn't really a secret. He was obviously using donations to pay for his escorts in the end. I look at it like the higher you climb, the farther you will fall.

I didn't think it was his wife because she was only dialing it in for the "good wife" routine since she was only going to show up for the governors ball. Her only concern was status and privilege She proved that when she slept with the journalist to stop him from publishing the truth.

I thought he was seeing another hooker at the end. The funny thing about the ring was that why did he ever take it off to begin with? Hookers don't care if a guy is married in fact probably prefer a married guy since he will be more discrete and may be less likely to carry STD's.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

reply

He didn't kiss his ring, he wet his finger to make removing his ring easier as he had done every time he met with an escort. Removing the ring wasn't for the escort's benefit but for him to mentally remove himself from being married, so he could be someone else. At the end he was clearly visiting another escort, but chose to leave the ring on because he had now made peace with himself that "he was the guy who would walk through the door". The distinction between who he is and who he had to be to sleep with these women was no longer necessary.

What showed you that?

reply

He was a sex addict. He had several close calls. The first one was when he went to the doctors because he thought he might of had an std but that didn't scare him enough. The second time was almost being found out about through the FBI and being publicly humiliated not to mention his wife finding out should of been enough. The third time might cost him and might be 3 strikes and he's out. He's a sex addict plain and simple and doesn't help he's still married and screwing escorts. He's also human but if he doesn't want to change then he won't but it will only hurt him in the end!
