Could it be that Jude was adopted because if he was that would make the ending so much more dramatic for a number of reasons.
I never got that impression. I think his mom meant that she was probably more into animals than people. Also, remember, she was pregnant with him during a time when there was no internet and information wasn't as easy to come by as it is today. Women didn't start seeing an OBGYN on a monthly basis until the late 80's.
