[Spoilers]Shock values

It used to be film-making taboo to show children dying, as that'd have made any scene suddenly take a dark turn.

Well as time passed, viewers are getting more and more accustom to the formula that it didn't take long before this can of worm need to be opened to once again brings out a "fresh" experience for the moviegoers.

I have to say it kind of worked. I found myself being the cynic going about how: "Of course the dad died right there but the kid lives from falling off 7 floor building, they don't got the balls to kill off a kid. Now Andy Lau's going to take care of her just like before." Before BAM, she didn't make it.

That's not to say the twists aren't good in the movie (like how Andy Lau calling the cellphone for another attempt at betrayal, only to have the guy saved yet again by luck", but the Final Destination car crash at the end was a real eye-roll.

But at least they didn't make it so the guy sent the video to his ex-gf while he was hiding in the taxi. Then the ex-gf exposes Andy Lau (that probably be too much a "meta" shoutout to The Departed.)

I agree, I did not see that ending coming! I actually though Andy Lau was going to put a bullet in his back or he rigged the car to explode once he got in. The only real complain is that Andy should have died like 5 times over, I mean how many car crashes/explosions can this guy live thru? Over all I enjoyed it, its kind of the Asian version of Heat in someways, which isnt a bad thing at all. A solid 7/10 for me.

I also think they made the Hong Kong police looked really pathetic. Some of the scenes the swat team were just running directly at the enemies without cover. And where are the helicopters or snipers on rooftop?

reply

Okay that's in every movie where people just running into gunfire.

If you saw how real police operates, like during the Boston bomber chase, the kid was unarmed, stuck inside a dry boat in somebody's back yard and it STILL took the police like 2 hours to arrest him.

The entire time the force was hiding behind their trucks scared to come out or fire any shots, which is all understandable: Safety is absolutely the most important thing.

But in movies, terrorists and polices will stand in the open to shoot at each other even though they should all be behind covers and not firing.

i should mention that there was a shootout against the Tsarnaev brothers at one point. Apparently, it was so chaotic that some of the police had shot each other.
