Canada's 'Southland'

I haven't seen the original version, but this remind alot of Southland. The cases aren't as important as the character building, tho with a smaller cast. Also, the camera work is similar to Southland's hand-held style.

You didn't mention if you like it. I never watched SOUTHLAND so I can't comment. I do enjoy 19-2 though.

Southland was exciting, there was action every few minutes, multiple plots overlapping. This is boring, Sidney. Even if you are interested in the characters (not particularly), there's nothing going on. Montreal doesn't have quite the tension of LA I suppose. I'm one and done on this.

The camera work was better in Southland, the atmosphere was more tense, the dry comedy was there. This is as enjoyable as Rookie Blue, Flashpoint or Da Vinci's Inquest, and I like all these series. Including 19-2.

I never watched it beyond season two...it did nothing for me...so the fact that it went to a cable station in the US and wasn't picked up by another Canadian network didn't bother me

must we always compare something to something else...

all shows are similar if you put it that way...

and do you know how many shows now adays are hand held camera.....pretty much all of them

reply

I gave up southland after about two eppies.......and even if I didn't, I would have had to give it up after season one, because it went to American cable....so

I can't say, for sure....but, I don't like that hand held style of shooting...

it's too, well, disjointed....and at times it makes me dizzy...

so far I haven't noticed that on 19;2....so

Definite shades of Southland...and thats a GREAT thing

reply

Agree. The style is similar for me. And season 1 of this was the best since I experienced season 1 of Southland.

reply

It's much better.

"19-2" is not "Canada's Southland"! Canada has produced many great police series over the years (e.g., "Flashpoint", "Cold Squad", "Da Vinci's Inquest", "Intelligence", "Murdoch Mysteries", comedy "Republic of Doyle", and recently "Motive" and "19-2") that are also very popular in many other countries. And from my perspective, are far more realistic than most U.S. cop shows (less shooting, and devoid of annoying background music). And Canadian laws/legal system are different than in the U.S.
Loved watching "Law & Order: UK" for similar reasons - more realistic, British laws/legal system are similar to Canadian laws, less shooting and less annoying background music.
