What is the crime rate in Canada? Is it true what they say?

Is it true what they say; that the problem in Canada is that there is no problem?

Tks!

reply

Kind of.

Crime rate in Canada is, on average, 44 times lower than in the USA. And it's a crime rate per person statistic, which means that the fact that there are more people in the USA is irrelevant in the equation.

Roughly, if you're American, it means that out of 44 people you know who had something bad happen to them, a crime, well, only 1 of them would have had happen to him for real in Canada.

That puts things into perspective.

tks man, that sure helps, it must be a very calm place to live

if you let me ask more (!) what about cost of living and money making?

reply

That heavily depends on where you live.

West coast for example (British Columbia - Vancouver) is very expensive, even more than big American cities. Alberta as well.

East coast is less expensive, even Montreal isn't nearly as bad. Toronto is quite expensive, but that's because it's the biggest city in the country. New York in USA is very expensive too.

Money making is slightly less than the USA, in general, but work weeks are a bit shorter as well to compensate. Again, that depends where you live. The 4 "rich" Provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec, which combined make for 86% of the country's GDP. The other 6 provinces and 3 territories split the rest.

And Health care is free for everyone.

Money making is slightly less than the USA,

that too depends on what your job is, or where you live...

no, some top docs don't make as much as US top docs...but that's just one example...

and here in Ontario, I do know for a fact that our hourly wage (minimum) is by far higher then your average US minimum wage...and stuff like that...

Agreed on all of the above, but Health Care isn't actually 'free' we do pay for it in a sense out of the taxes we pay.
Medication is cheaper here than in the US too, which is good.

OK, Canada's east coast is NOT Montreal and Toronto. I know you know that but i doubt a lot of readers on here would. The atlantic provinces are the east coast and while they're far less populated, they still, you know, exist. As a maritimer it always annoys me whenever someone from the west speaking contemptibly of the east (i'm not referring to you here, sim_belanger1, i know you never did any such thing on this board) it's always about Toronto or maybe somewhere in Québec, as if that's all there is to the eastern side of the country. We may be smaller but it kind of sucks to always get lumped in with Ontario and Québec.

Kind of neat that Republic of Doyle gives Newfoundland some representation. Now we need some kind of show set on the mean streets of Halifax!

Welcomer Maritimer! (silvercreature) I love the Maritimes and have visited often. Especially Shediac, Bouctouche and PEI. Love all the Eastern Coast.

Thankyou, rebecca. Very nice of you to say.

Thanks for the info -- I appreciate it. And I'm not surprised; Canada's reputation as a much more civil society is well-deserved.

Please let me share with you that the phrase you want is "The crime rate in Canada is, on average, 1/44th the crime rate in the US" or "The crime rate in the US is, on average, 44 times the crime rate in Canada." The words "times," indicating multiplication, denotes an increase; division indicates a decrease. Cheers.
