Zombie Evelyn got screwed

The movie was okay. The acting was what I expected. I love Dante's work with Gremlins and the Burbs. I love his throwbacks. The movie is definitely not something I would've dropped money at the theater for, but it's moderate entertainment for what I paid - after all, I wish I worked in the industry.

My biggest problem was with the boyfriend's perception of 'bad' relationship. Seriously? The writer didn't succeed in portraying her as a nightmare, because going off at her man for flirting with an ice cream store girl or changing his apartment around without permission are not the worst things that can happen (I'll concede the poster removal would require some choice discussion). But Evelyn's nature was always apologetic and remorseful in the end and was willing to work through it. Relationships have a dark side, whodathunkit!

It's Ashley Greene, too. So to land a girl looking like that who actually shows some tenderness and care for your whining ass comes across as dumb luck and if you're willing to take your fat, pathetic, loser half-brother's advice on relationships you means you'd be better off reading Cosmopolitan. And someone mentioned it already on this board, but the notion of women looking like her or Alexandra D'addario's character begging for relations from scabby members of society's underbelly is the most unbelievable part of this film.

The truth is, Evelyn was flawed but her devotion was a respectable trait that plenty of level-headed gents seek in a woman. And considering Anton Yelchin's character actually WAS a loser with a meaningless job and circle of friends, she was out of his league. In the real world, men like him are the first casualty in real marriage. Evelyn's greatest flaw was her taste in men. If Alexandra D'addario's character was a better match, cool. Man up and do it because you want to, not because you're Tubby Lumpkins half-bro who lives with his mom recommends it. Now...to what truly matters.

When zombie Ashley Greene wants to make you into a zombie so you can do filthy, nasty, deplorable things with each other for eternity, you let her make you into a zombie. Geez, man.

She was possessive, jealous, a vegan, and *beep* crazy. What's not to like.

reply

but... she was a psycho who changed his apartment without asking him? She had her nice moments, but she was still uber-controlling. If you put up with that just because of how she looks... you're whipped, man!

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

Evelyn was a manipulative ball busting bitch.

BTW, what's your definition of "loser" anyway?

Actors do not have a job...they have a blast!

reply

As you see by those other replies, the movie was aimed at the losers who also must read Cosmopolitan or watch the teen TV soaps on the CW for guidance.

Under our clothes, we are all naked! Bare nipples (of females), genitals or buttocks is nudity.

reply

Don't know how you conclude that someone's a loser when you haven't even met them. What's your definition of a loser, anyway, someone who disagrees with you about movies?

You're wrong, BTW. I don't read Cosmo or watch teen TV soaps on CW or on any other channel. Oops...

Nah. I hated her. My whole family and I cheered when she got hit by the bus. Just sayin...

reply

I second that!!!
I had a girlfriend pretty much like that. The only difference is that she wasn't a vegan.
But everything else...
Even the fact that she went bat $hit crazy when I broke up with her.

She was a complete and total bitch.

You have to remember what we saw was only a small.. maybe 24-48 hours of her character. Yes, I feel bad she was messed up. BUT at the same time, she seemed to use that as an excuse for her controlling/bad behavior.

Can you extrapolate that behavior over what was most likely months and MONTHS.. He had just reached a breaking point.. It was nothing that she was a bad person. But he couldn't be held accountable to try and hold her back together every time she had a break down.. apologize for her every time she freaked out on someone for no reason.

Since yours is a good/mature question, I've chosen to respond.

I agree with most of what you said. True, we just saw the conclusion of what was obviously a miserable relationship where Max was pulling the emotional weight, and hewas perfectly justified to end it. Despite the physical aspect of their relationship, there was little they had in common. Max only appeared to wise up because of his half-brother's advice, the latter whom was an unqualified moron with no credibility on relationships.

I also never believed Max was responsible to apologize on account of her behavior or shortcomings anytime she messed up; I only believe he had skewed judgment when it came to dealing with their disagreements. In every situation they had a disagreement, Evelyn seemed repentant and at least willing to solve the issue when she saw how much she upset Max. Evelyn's 'bad' behavior was also not as unacceptable as the movie would have out. In a real-world scenario, for example, getting upset about your boyfriend's half-brother carousing naked with some strange girls in your place of dwelling is perfectly acceptable. It's also normal for a girl to get defensive, in a more reserved manner mind you, at her guy's flirtation (intentional or unintentional) with another girl IN FRONT of you. So unless commentators here are advocating open relationships, being on guard against outside intrusion is a part of a healthy relationship. I can promise if Alexandra D'addario starts getting friendly with me at an ice cream counter, my wife going to eventually voice her distaste with a cold look, utterance, or choice discussion...that's just the way it works. And some commentators had various problems with her worldview (vegan, environmentalist). That, too, isn't Evelyn's problem. It's her right, as it is Max's to indulge in horror culture. It's just simply up to each of them are willing to put up with from the other.

At the end of the day, my problem is just with the writing of the characters. Max's character was okay (and played by the effective Anton Yelchin, God rest his soul), but the whole premise didn't quite horrify as I expected when I got the film. I think it would've been more effective if they made Evelyn a true, walking nightmare instead of sweet, forgiving girl with a bit jealous of Max. They could've made her obnoxious, vengeful, and psychotic. Perhaps if she was physically or verbally abusive, always threatening to castrate Max, was trying to run dogs over instead of adopting them, or was a junkie or severe alcoholic...sure. That's a girl you don't want to keep around, let alone have coming back from the dead for you. Plus, the movie could've been set up for some great horror and comedy scenes. And with a zombie as a key character, there should've been a MUCH higher kill list. It's just a rule.

It's just a silly but watchable film. And it has Ashley Greene. For me, that helps.

After I saw the trailer - he seemed like a bigger dick than she (Evelyn) did. I guess that's not how it should be, but he seemed so unlikable that it made me want to pass at this movie because I know I'd just get angry watching he get away with everything AND get the other girl in the end.
They seemed way too different to each other in order for a relationship to work. And of course he was a weak loser, for not daring to break up with her, for taking advice from an even bigger idiot, for flirting, etc.
