Day time vampires?

Since when can vampires walk around in the daylight?

In the original movie they couldn't.

reply

they arent vampires :/

reply

Long fangs. Bite people on the neck. That is a vampire.

reply

They are supposed to be a different type of vampire that is bred from a serpent as opposed to a bat.

All I need is one mic...

reply

You know if they are bred from serpents, then they really should wanna be in the sun as much as possible. I mean Snakes usually hang out where the sun can directly hit them since they are coldblooded.

They aren't really, are they? They are covering up from the sun with leather jackets and motorcycle helmets or umbrellas. Evidently that is enough protection from sunlight in this universe. Perhaps it's only direct sunlight that is dangerous. I mean moonlight is still sunlight, just reflected, so clearly there is some component of light they can tolerate.

reply

Yeah but Carlos could stand direct sunlight at the border crossing with no ill effects. He seems to have a great tolerance. Is this because he is a very old culebra? But Santanico is older than he is and she cannot stand it at all. Another time Carlos mentioned that he didn't want to stay in the sunlight for very long, indicating his tolerance had a time limit. But for other culebras there was no tolerance; they burned up right away.
Ritchie had some level of tolerance since in the desert his facial skin burned a little but he did not burn up.

So this is an issue. If it was explained in the show I missed it. It seems a lot of other people have questions about this also.

reply

Now I might remember incorrectly but didn't Carlos have a trenchcoat, gloves & 'fedora'? I think from above at least he was protected from direct sunlight...or was that the scene where he ate Kate's errant boyfriend?

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

reply

Some vampires can, like Dracula in the novel. In From Dusk Till Dawn, they can't, but the series was really inconsistent/ loose with the rules on this one because hats could stop it, or even windshields, it appears, which is nuts and seemed a little silly. If they make a rule, they should stick to it, not wish-wash.

reply

They have a temporary tolerance of indirect sunlight but usually under heavy clothing or inside a vehicle. They're most invulnerable right after feeding.

reply

The idea that vampires can't walk around by day comes from the film Nosferatu from 1922. It wasn't always part of Vampire lore, and the only reason the makers of Nosferatu had their vampire die from sunlight was to avoid a lawsuit because they were basically adapting Bram Stoker's Dracula, but they didn't own the copyright, so they changed the name and added that thing at the end where he turns to ash in sunlight.

This is one of those things that was blindly copied into other vampire stories later on, but even the original Dracula could walk around by day.

reply

Technically speaking, they aren't vampires like any other. They're a new take on vampires, more snake inspired than bats which is why they're called Culebras instead. Though even as far back as the original film, they were more grotesque and scaly than elegant and pale.

What does bug me is the inconsistency with them being able to tolerate sunlight. I can buy that maybe after so many centuries, certain Culebras developed a tolerance for the sunlight whereas newer ones burn up. Or, even that there may be different types of monsters in the mythology that aren't affected by the sun. However, there's been times when the culebras who were shown to smoke and burn during the sun can then suddenly stand in it without a sign of injury, like Carlos in season 1. In the 2nd episode he burned up a little, but in the 5th, he walked perfectly in it. I'll always have a problem with the 5th episode though due to the director. It could have been a lot better.

Yeah, they have been somewhat inconsistent with the length of time culebras can stand in the sun before they start to smoke and have to get inside quick.

reply

if a vampire has recently fed, it is able to walk in sunlight temporarily.

The only Vampire Bat species only exist in American Continent ( from lower North America (Mexico ) to Central and South America )

It was the Spanish explorer who brought the Vampire bat Stories back to Europe , and then people started to connect Vampire with Bats.

The Culebras vampire probably deliberately misdirected the Spanish explorers with Vampire Bat Stories , By the time Bram Stoker wrote Dracula , European already associated Vampire with Bats .
