But What Was The Motive?

OK, it was a good yarn but why did the good doctor track his former patient to the picnic spot where she was with her daughter and bash her head in with a rock? He wasn't a nutter so what was his motive for killing her? I didn't understand that bit.

Yes, I came on here to find out exactly that, but no one else has posted. This was in the FAQ's :

"How did Peter Firth's character know the woman he killed? Before he killed her, he said "Hello Anne" ?
Peter Firth's character, Dr Rawlins, was a locum for about 9 weeks at a walk-in-clinic at Leominster. Anne, troubled by morning-sickness during pregnancy, attended the clinic and Dr Rawlins prescribed her some anti-sickness medication" .........

Hardly a motive for murder though!

That was what made the whole thing quite pointless. No motive. I mean, we're suppised to believe that the mere fact that he knocks his wife about means he's going to follow a woman and murder her in cold blood in view of her child. Why? It made nonsense whtasoever. I thought it was going to turn out that theynwere having an affair, and she broke it off, or maybe he was the father of her baby or something. But no. No explanation at all., His first wife's beahviour is likewise inexplicable - how could she go off and leave her daughter with a violent man? Nothing makes any sense.
