I saw this film this past weekend at TIFF not really knowing much of anything about it going in and was really happy I went, it balanced out all the heavier subject matter of the other films I saw. It was touching but also laugh out loud funny at points. Sam Worthington did a good job as the dad, but it was the kids who really stood out (well and grandpa, he was hilarious).
My one warning is try to avoid watching the trailer, I saw it today after having already seen the film and it gives a lot of moments away and it will be far more enjoyable to watch the film without having seen the trailer first I think.

I agree entirely! How good was the bit when Milkshake by Kelis is played? Lol

My god, I was astounded when they did that scene. The grandfather walking slowly towards the kids while that played? If the direction of the film wasn't so clueless I would have thought they accidently spliced in an Adam Sandler comedy about geriatric pedophiles. Then there was that theme song: "The world is full of beauty / So boys and girls shake your booty". WTF?

It might be a bit different if you aren't Australian. But I found the movie charming throughout, which probably helped me to not pick up any paedophilia that you seem to have. Surely you can't compare this to Sandler!?

that bit wasn't in the copy i saw. at least i don't remember it... are you making a pop culture joke which this old geezer doesn't understand, or was that a real scene?

The Milkshake segment was in the yard sale scene, in which they're trying to raise money for his Japan trip.

The trailer gives away a lot of moments? Heck, the tired, worn out plot gives away the entire film within the first dozen minutes.

I thought it had a fun vibe also, and great cinematography. There was an element of fantasy to it, which figures in the daydream-like ending.
