If these black smokey creatures creep up on people without warning, causing people to go bat sh*t crazy and homicidal, why did the ballerina already have a knife on her ready to cut the rope and hang herself. It was if she knew smokey was on his way😕

Maybe the timeline was go crazy, grab the knife, dance and then hang herself.
I'm willing to give the story the benefit of the doubt and assume "the phenomenon" doesn't have a completely defined modus operandi at this point and that it could be influencing behavior before a complete freakout.
The guy in the photo was already considered strange (by Jen) as was the girl at the night club. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to presume these people may become possessed a short while before full manifestation and homicidal/suicidal mode.
Makes me wonder if the same thing is happening to our main character.
All that said, I did ask myself where that dancer had hidden her little knife ...
