"They told me you were gone" (spoiler!)

So, "They told me you were gone" (as I recall it) are the last words of the film, said by the wife when Whit returns home.

But, Whit was only on the Infini colony for around a minute Earth time. Upon return he was questioned frantically along with the other slipstreamers, but then they were cleared of quaranteen. Then debriefing and he goes home. This is actually how all slipstream trips take place.

Why would someone contact the wife to tell her that her husband was "gone" if he was only gone for one minute, exactly as planned? Did something completely different happen? Does this sentence somehow flip the entire ending on its head? Or is it just poor writing...

No because it was him that they were going to rescue from the incident at the beginning of the movie, which leads us to believe he was there slightly longer, although it doesn't specify how long between the incident and the rescue. The rescue team were the ones that would only be gone for a minute, which if I remember correctly was 24 hours in the colony.

Ahh right, I forgot he started with a "dirty jump" and that was the end of the "West Coast" teams. It makes sense that they would say he was gone when the whole West Coast section imploded.

He was still only gone for a few minutes though, but then reentered our time on the other coast.
