What Did You Gain From Seeing This?(SPOILERS)
I have always found Guillaume Canet to be a talented actor (and director) but unfortunately, here in the U.S., we don't often get to see his work.
When I saw him tonight in this, he was every bit as talented as I thought he would be. But I ask myself what I really gained from the film? The portrait of this man is extremely complex, and at the end there is no summation or analysis of his motivations. I feel like I am standing in that (locked) back room, surrounded by garbage bags and guns. I'm sure that was the director's intention- to say that one can't always explain WHY someone is crazy/does crazy things, but, in place of that impossible explanation, here is what their life looked like; so you can make your own conclusions.
Aside from what i have mentioned, I feel like the director was particularly successful at creating another plane of existence (and the music had a very important part in that mood, that alternate sphere) which made transitioning back into 'real life' very jarring. It's rare that a film takes me away so completely, and 'hats off!' to the director for achieving that. But I still feel like " I could easily live without seeing it."
p.s. I was very impressed by the makeup team here. Taking a 'regular-looking handsome guy' like Canet- and making him look very different- is quite a challenge ,I would think. The hair piece, the eye liner, the pancake makeup- were very effective. Did others of you notice this too?
