David Threlfall

He was excellent in this. Very good characterisation!

Yes, he was astonishing. I hardly recognised him. I feel a bit sad now though, I almost wish I hadn't watched! Drunken, violent, unfaithful, miserly, he didn't come out of it very well did he?

I don't think he came out of it too badly at all. He drank too much, but many of us do. And in the stressful world of entertainment, it's understandable and endemic by the look of things. He was violent once or twice and unfaithful once (as far as was shown in the dramatisation). Hardly makes him a devil! As people go, he seemed like a decent bloke. As celebs go, a saint!

Celebrity seems to crush many, but to him the need to make the audience laugh seemed to be a huge weight on his shoulders causing unhappiness and loneliness, which increased his desire to be funny. A vicious circle.

The one thing that does mystify me though was his refusal to buy a round. Considering he must have been making very good money, I find it very odd and antisocial.

Threlfall got the voice right and in many ways got the facial resemblance ok but of course Cooper was a big man and portly and Threlfall was a bit thin here and there. They did use clothes to make him look bigger and portlier.

Its that man again!!

David Threlfall was impeccable. I expected the usual backlash from Tommy Cooper fans and people who saw the television back then as some kind of golden age - in many ways it was I guess.

However, the lives these people were leading was often tragic and soaked in drink and drugs. I stopped reading Kenny Everett's biography because it was too depressing and spoiling my memories of him. I think if anything Tommy Cooper got off lightly - he drank so much to cure his chronic stage fright and then couldn't go through life without it.

Also, some of the criticism levelled at the programme is unfair - it's a dramatisation and it has to make concessions here and there. The only downside was Helen McCrory and Amanda Redman didn't really have enough to do - other than that I thought it was excellent.

Watching it as I type. David is doing an excellent job at acting . Really enjoying the film. I'm a pisshead aswell so it doesn't bother me. It is seen what he was like though with the bit on the side and that .

Just saw it, David Threlfall was amazing, it was a very good programme and well worth waiting for. Still feel dead sorry for Tommy though, I don't think he could handle the stress of being a celebrity, I suppose unless you experience it for yourself you don't know what it's like.
I wish he could have quit the booze and got better, but still I guess he had a pretty good life, that a lot people would love to have.

Agree with everyone. It's hard to believe it was the same man who took the lead in Shameless for all those seasons. What an excellent actor!

Such a small love. Such a little tear.

watched the recording today, Threlfall was excellent

He did a good job. Very often I cannot watch biopics if the actor doesn't sufficiently look like the person they are portraying. After a few moments of watching David Threlfall playing Tommy, I relaxed. He is a satisfactory lookalike for Tommy. And he acted it well. I believed in the story that much more for him playing Tommy Cooper.

He's absolutely brilliant as Cooper. And the makeā€”up people were equally good.
