Hey, call me crazy, but I loved it.

Sure there are flaws and stuff in this film but I can honestly say I enjoyed it. A lot.
Call me whatever names you like, but I thought it was great.

I tried watching it a second time. It was better than I remember but the conjuring was better.

That's not a good sign since I think The Conjuring sucks.

Wrong, hater

I watched it last night after my 12-year-old begged me to get it from Redbox. Maybe it was because of lowered expectations due to lousy reviews, but I liked it too. In terms of comparisons to recent poorly reviewed horror films, I thought it was wayyyy more effective than, say, Insidious 2.

reply

It is absolutely nowhere near Insidious 1 or 2 and I will defend that to my death.

reply

The first one is a really effective old-school thriller. The second one . . well, I can't describe it because it made such a little impression on me I barely remembered that I saw it two days afterwards. I could have slept through it and gotten as much out of it.

Even accounting for taste, I can't imagine it's worth dying for. If someone holds a gun to your head and demands you say "Annabelle is a better movie than Insidious 2!" just do it, man! You have your whole life filled with lousy cash-grab sequels ahead of you.

I felt the same way. It was a fun watch and not bad like people make it out to be.

reply

Shush, they'll just drag us to Briarcliff.

I liked it, too. It's not a masterpiece or as good as The Conjuring, but it is better than a lot of stuff I've watched. It also had some original scares, I enjoyed it.

reply

i agree with you

reply

Yeah I thought it was okay. I guess because I was expecting way worse, it was better then I thought it was going to be for sure lol.

I really enjoyed it, and i know others who did too - although they wouldn't be the type to go online and write reviews, so i think there is definitely a bias (in terms of negative reviews) towards horror movie buffs etc - forgetting the mass appeal of this film ..... to those who like a scary movie now and again.

I'd say Annabelle is my 5th favourite supernatural horror of the last 5 years (the top 4 being the conjuring, insidious 1&2 and the woman in back).

I'm bias as I don't like gore films or zombie apocalypses - and prefer haunted houses, ghosts and demons.

I was genuinely scared in the cinema - but also amused as I find the whole idea of an evil doll a bit 'campy' - and the film did have that camp, predictable edge - but hey its a formula that works.

reply

I didn't like how they tried to explain it. First it was that crazy woman Anabelle possessing the doll, but also a demon... I'd prefer if it was just a *beep* up, living, killing doll.

Second, I would prefer an ending that had more impact, that woman was totally random. Mia should have killed her baby or something.

Third, I didn't care about a single character.

reply

I wouldn't say that the woman was totally random...she obviously took a liking to Mia and was kinda weirdly stalking her almost because she was a new mother, and the woman was responsible for the death of her own daughter - therefore taking away her motherhood in a way. She wanted to be a mother vicariously through Mia, and also we know that she was suicidal after her daughter's death, so she felt like she didn't have anything to live for - not to mention, her daughter told her that she was needed for a greater purpose, and she was there when the demon took the baby, so she felt that her purpose was lying right in front of her.

As for your first point, do we really need another movie about a doll that is just haunted and kills people and that's it? I bet if that's what this movie was, then people would be asking WELL WHY IS IT HAUNTED THO LIKE WHO IS IT BLAH BLAH BLAH
so you know what? Horror films (and other films too for that matter) can NEVER win. There's always viewers who want it done differently, and not happy with what they got. I personally really enjoyed this movie because it was a more complex plot line than just OMG A HAUNTED DOLL KILLS PPL WTFFFF. I thought it was genuinely frightening, and the demon aspect was very unexpected and unsettling.

reply

Me too. I don't understand all the hate. The lead actress was definitely very reminiscent of Mia Farrow in "Rosemary's Baby". I was quite impressed. I was scared. And I watch a lot of horror and most of it is garbage these days. This was good. Only actor I didn't care about was the husband. I feel like anyone could have played that part better. Other than that, I would recommend it. And that used to be my job - and I never had complaints. People don't pay enough attention to what they watch these days. Then ask idiotic questions that are answered right on screen. And they have th nerve to be super critical.

The doll should've @ least talked.

I thought the movie was awful & lackluster.

It's a good thing!-Martha Stewart

I expected it to be bad but my expectations weren't low enough: after 20min I was done.

This is straight-to-DVD kind of movie, at best.
