Don't get the FBI

I liked this movie but I don't understand the FBI part. They imply that the NFLs reach extends to the federal government and the FBI is arresting Cyrill to shut up Omalu. But the ends shows that basically once the Federal govt gets involved the games over for the NFL as congress is grilling Godell on capital hill and they are offering Omalu a prestigious position in the government.

It was probably just a fake conflict the writer/director wrote into the script to pad it with external drama. The film was such a mess; the writers should have tried to narrow the focus. The frontline documentary was so much better on it than all the melodrama, and another overrated performance from Smith.

Agree with you there.

*beep* you know that something as big as the NFL reaches as far as the FBI, keep living in your dreamland not the thinking that money has been everything in this country instead of joining the new generation that actually gives a *beep* about helping others and helping the planet. People call us the failed generation because we don't want to work on some BS corporate ladder and actually do something meaningful for a change.

The NFL is not that big. The FBI is not that small.

reply

The FBI may be large but any major source of wealth like the NFL can make that dog sit, stay, lay down, play dead or even bite at a moment's notice. Money talks, some people listen, most wonder in vain what is going on. Until such time as honest people speak up the "truth" will be whatever those in power with money say that it is.

Wecht had a history courtroom battles with political adversaries. in the 1990's Wecht paid a $200,000 settlement to Allegheny County over issues involving private work being done at the county morgue. I think a matter of insufficient recordkeeping and reimbursements.

These conflicts moved to the Federal level in the 2000's. There was an FBI investigation and subsequent indictment of Wecht but this was prior to the publication of the CTE findings in the medical journal. After a trial a jury did not find for any of the charges.

Except the timelines between RESEARCH and publication, and his investigation and indictment are a lot closer than your comment implies.

You don't think folks knew about the deaths, the findings, research in advance of the actual publication in Jul2005?

He was investigated by the Feds in late Winter-Spring 2005 and indicted later.

"There was an FBI investigation and subsequent indictment of Wecht but this was prior to the publication of the CTE findings in the medical journal. After a trial a jury did not find for any of the charges."

Payback coming out of the CTE issue certainly my have been present but I do not believe it was the driving cause. In other words even if Dr Omalu had not come up with the theory of CTE Wecht would still have been engaged with these ongoing investigations and prosecutions. The basis of which were Democratic-Republican political fighting.

Wecht comments on the issue in an article by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 12-22-2015: "He characterizes the movie as “pretty accurate,” but some of the details are off the mark or incomplete, he suggests. The movie simplifies the filing of charges, sharply reduced and later dismissed, against Dr. Wecht regarding Allegheny County resources and his private pathology business."

Just Google "Cyril Wecht" if anyone wants more info regarding the prosecutions.
