Is this movie based on the TV series? Update

I just saw the trailer on imdb.com . My question is does this movie have anything to do with the BBC TV series of the same name?I ask because the actor Peter Firth was in the series.

I checked the imdb.com database and the actor does play the same character.

I don't know why people would hate the film. The series was pretty good.

BTW I enjoyed the series .

You can watch it as a stand-alone.
