I don't understand [spoilers]

why this is getting panned so much. I really liked it, gave it a 7/10.

It was atmospheric, fairly good plot, not bad acting and I was drawn in from the start.
I liked how the director sucks us, the audience, into the delusion with Kenner (cop). It didn't seem like a twist, Kenner woke up to what was happening and we do to.
The damn reverend and Angela were the blame for it all.

I absolutely agree with you.The film was really good and so different from the recent Hollywood thrillers that we are used to watch.Great acting and casting, really good cinematography and the plot was great too.I enjoyed it from beginning to end, such a rollercoaster. The end wasn't disappointing for me...but in contrast really unique and unexpected.Alejandro Amenabar knows how to nail the thriller genre. The only flaw for me was that the character of Angela Gray played by the great Emma Watson has about 15 mins screen time...I wanted some more, especially after the big twist.

I gave it a 7/10 also. It's horrifying to know that so many innocent people in the US went through hell (pardon the pun) because of satanic panic.

I think that for most, they want the simplicity of a movie where there are bad guys and you can root against them and watch them get there's in the end.
A movie like this is inherently disappointing for these people.
I also think the movie failed to suck the audience into the delusion as much as you say. Whether that was intentional or a failing of the movie is up for debate. I think it was intentional as it was made clear from the beginning what this movie was about, so there was never a twist. Perhaps it was a mistake from a commercial point of view.

I think it was because of the marketing and some other factors.

I remember watching the trailer and remembering that the movie looked interesting but could not figure out what it was about.
