Undertones

One of the things I love about this is the subtle way it handles Sieg's feelings and their relationship. Every now and then I find something dropped in, that seems to be about more than they're letting on.

For example, when Marc asks Sieg about his opinion on the bandana and Sieg says, 'can I be in-between?' Marc tells him, 'sure then you'll always be safe'.

Or when Sieg is pushing Marc out of the way and telling him 'we need to get by' (which is what his whole family does, and how he feels he needs to be). Obviously this may have been lost in translation, but that resonated a lot with me.

Anything else you can think of?

On the inside, I'm a poet. Outside? Shake bad guys, shake.

You should read the comments on this page: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/boys-jongens-film-review-699129. The first two commenters give such a thorough analysis that will probably drive you watch the film again.

I'm not very sure that this movie will be remembered in the coming years, but I think Jongens is absolutely brilliant. The beauty of this film lies in its subtleties. It is very rare to see a film like this nowadays.

WOW, that was one hell of a read. I never noticed any of the subtle points they mentioned. If these were intentional by the film makers (which thinking about it, I cannot see how they were not) its a bloody brilliant piece of storytelling.

I totally agree, it is an absolutely brilliant little gem of a film. The story is easy to follow and you actually don't have to think too hard (clearly I didn't).

Needless to say, it easily makes the list of my favourites.

After having watched this movie embarrassingly way too many times there are always subtle things I pick up on that I didn't notice when I watched it previously. Not only their conversations but just the body language between the two boys. I love noticing little things that I didn't catch before. What a wonderful little film.

Great catch about the bandana statement. Three more things I can think of... and fair warning, this is one of my favorite movies and i've watched it WAY too many times. :) To me the directing, cinematography, and undertones are what make this one of the best movies I've ever scene. It's BEAUTIFUL!!

The first kissing scene in lake, shot from above, looks like you are peeking in on a very private and vulnerable moment, and then they both turn up and only we as the audience see on their faces completely opposite feelings to having kissed. Marc looks content and almost giddy and Sieger looks scared and freaked out. That scene was genius.

Another undertone throughout the movie was the way the turmoil between Sieg's dad and brother paralleled the the turmoil in his mind as he was trying to come to terms with realizing he was gay. All the scenes where Sieg is at home thinking and clearly upset/worried about his feelings for Marc, his dad and brother are fighting in the background... then at the end when he is finally on the brink of accepting things... suddenly his dad gives his brother the moped back, like he just let go and accepted his older son for who he is, sending Sieg over the edge to accepting himself and going after his love. That whole undertone was genius as well if it was intended.

Also, both times Sieger kisses the girl (Jessica?) it's shot through glass (the first time through the glass wall of the little eatery and then second time through the glass of the claw machine at the fair). It's seemed symbolic of it being for show and not what Sieger really wanted.
