Actually I like this more than Summer Storm (possible Spoilers)

After seeing both movies I felt that Boys was much more interesting for me. I guess I'm a tad biased as I did track and field during my high school days and could relate to it more.

The lead character Sieger came off as much more likeable and less homophobic than Tobi from Summerstorm. I mean all Sieger did was shove Marc (no one needed to put themselves in a sling). Boys also had a much better ending.

Granted the two films were quite different. Summer Storm was more about the friendship between two close friend and unrequited love. Boys was less about a close friendship (which wasn't that explored in the film though the best friend appears to know all along what team Sieger played for) and more about discovering oneself and finding love in an unlikely place.

Both films were good I just felt Summerstorm was too over-hyped (and I was more interested in the relationship between Georg and Malte than the leads: Tobi and Achim)

I enjoyed this more than Summerstorm too--and as much as Get Real and Beautiful Thing, which travel in similar territory too.

There are only so many variations that can be done, as far as coming of age/first romance stories are concerned. The greater variation is in the telling of the story. I loved how the writers, director and editors prevented/eliminated any excess, just giving us a beautifully filmed and exceptionally well-told story.

Some of my favorite directors (Merchant, Jeunet, Sokurov) are among my favorites because their films are beautiful; with the volume off their films are spectacular. This is the first gay film I've seen to cross into that territory.

I don't know if Summerstorm was over-hyped. I just stumbled across it. I gave it a ten when I saw it, years ago. I gave this one a ten without hesitation. Both were well done. Objectively, I'd have a much easier time arguing that Jongens is the better film of the two.

I'm not sure why this should be a competition among "coming of age" films. All four films in this discussion - Summerstorm, Get Real, Beautiful Thing and Boys - are absolutely wonderful and can be watched again and again. Any hype that they do get is for good reason.

I couldn't get into Summer Storm. It's overrated.
