unintentionally funny scene

"you found my phone! i was looking for that last night."

alec baldwin leans over to sister: "that was a month ago"

reply

I'd say it's the kind of comment that only a scumbag husband like the one portrayed by Baldwin would do.

reply

^ Agreed.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.
-Oscar Wilde

reply

Baldwin is so good at playing the scumbag husband.

reply

Kind of but it was also sad that she couldn't remember.

reply

She remembered that it was important though, even though they didn't know. That made it extra sad for me.

reply

i thought it was the scene when she peed herself. or did she, besides alzheimers, also have some kind of bladder disease which makes it impossible for her to hold the pee a minute longer?

reply

People with dementia do literally forget how to use a toilet sometimes. Of course, every case progresses in its own way, but it is not unusual for a person to forget what the feeling of a full bladder means and/or forget her way to the bathroom and/or be unable to figure out how to lift the lid, undress, sit down, and pee.

reply

I think it was fair, she was going running, casually had to pee, found the pictures got caught up in them and when he found her she then really had to pee and then got lost and couldn't hold it.

I'm not sure thin 50 year old woman are record holders for holding pee anyway :P

OH SPOILER ALERT!

reply

I thought it was a sad scene when she peed herself. It was really touching when Alec says "It's ok baby. Let's get you cleaned up".

"If our love was tragedy, why are you my remedy?"

reply

-Very touching scene; it's what 'saved' him as a character for me. He was kind of a jerk in a lot of other scenes but that he was there for her at that moment redeemed most of the other times he came up short.
The only other character in a movie I can think of that had to play a similar role was Jennifer Connelly in A Beautiful Mind. You don't really see too many films exploring people who stick by the 'in sickness and in health' part of their vows and how important it is when people really need that kind of profound support.

reply

well Mrfilmjunkie.. lets hope you never grow old and lose yourself!! She was lost!! In her own home!! Can you imagine how scary that was? and it does happen.. in real life..

reply

I didn't find it funny at all. I thought that having that scene of her looking for her phone and then cut to her husband finding it, making it seem like it's the next day but actually being a month later was very smart. It gave us a glimpse of what it would be like to have a disease like this, how we could lose an entire month without even realizing it.

It wasn't him making fun of her, it wasn't meant as comic relief, it was an update for the viewer on the progression of her disease.

reply

The unintentionally funny scene for me was when she kept forgetting to get the pill bottle out of the top drawer. It's sad, true enough. But I just found it kinda funny that here she was trying to kill herself and she kept forgetting what to do.

Hey! You know what? It is what it is.

reply

I think you meant heartbreaking, not funny.

reply

Exactly. Anyone who found it funny, obviously didn't get it.

That said, Moore did say she had lines re-written while filming, for she told the directors, "if I say that, it's going to get a laugh", and that's not what they were going for.

The scene that was shot where the camera is behind Moore's head while she was out of it and the family is discussing what they're going to do, originally called for Alice to gain consciousness and a say "what's for dinner?", Moore requested a change and it was changed to "it's hot in here".

reply

It was more intentionally unfunny. Ya dipstick.

^^This^^
My Grampa no longer has any concept of time, so it's also realistic.
What I thought was a little funny is when she saw her daughter in the hospital and asked, "What happened to her? She looks terrible!"

"Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?"

reply

scumbag husband? what??? he was lovely and caring, wtf are you talking about????
