There aren't any young African American guys?

How come both Kunta Kite and Chicken George are played by Brits? Aren't there any talented young American actors who can play these roles? That got a bunch of great American actresses to play the women.

They're all in prison.

You have some of the same thing in films. You've got Chiwitel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave and David Oyelowo in Selma.

Of course, most of the prominent white men in the show are also Brits: Matthew Goode, James Purefoy, Tony Curran, Jonathan Rhys Myers.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

I think Jonathan Rhys Myers is Irish.

With Kunta I think they wanted someone with the 'African' look and I think they nailed it. Chicken George was great. He could have been replaced by an American, but who?

The US doesn't really give opportunities to young black males except for as 'urban' youths. Michael B. Jordan maybe the exception and he started out on The Wire.

And at the same time, they casted Derek Luke to play an African.

I honestly would have never guessed that they were played by Brits. I think they did a great job playing their characters well, regardless of where they had came from.

Don't play games with a girl who can play better.

reply

I do think they did a good job. But this is the story of an American family and it seems odd that the two biggest male roles in the show were both cast with non-Americans.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

The actors are still black males.

Where are the Asian characters DC CW? #MoreAsians

That seems to be a weird sort of move in American television and movies in general.

Like in a lot of occupations, people with green cards are better workers and cost less money.

That's not the case here. I really doubt money was the issue when they casted this.

The film had 400 plus in the cast and many were notables. Of course money was an issue.

Most TV shows today have foreigners as the leads. White and black. I'm guessing it's because they're cheaper. Strong dollar, means imports are cheaper, including actors.

Derrick Luke, the one who played Kunte Kinte's uncle, who go this arm chopped off on the ship, is American, but of course, his part was short lived.

Replacing American actors with foreign seems to be a trend these days, not limited to black American actors.
