Not the Lottery show I was hoping for,

I was hoping this was an updated version of the old show "Lottery!" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085048/
:(

Came here to see if this was a remake, was disappointed as well. Loved that show as a kid.

reply

I thought this was going to be about the short story "The Lottery" the one where people are stoned to death.

reply

Yeah, me too. The first thing I thought of when I heard about the new show was Shirley Jackson´s short story. It could be a great show, something in the lines of Hunger Games (only different and with adults too). I just made no sense at all, lol.

reply

Me three. This is pretty much 180° from that kind of lottery!

But I'm into it so far, looks interesting.

reply

Totally thought that too. Which is why I watched the first episode, got confused and then went to IMDB...

reply

I would say that the second episode was a little better.

reply

Let's get a kickstarter going for someone to create The Lottery by Shirley Jackson!
That would be a TV show that I would really enjoy.

This series is very good. The dialogue and drama is great and inspiring. The whole idea is original. The authors are very well selected and their performances are very real. I am seeing the first episode right now, and I have not stopped, which is rare.

One thing is sure though, a computer technician would never be able to give one single punch to a strong doctor and put him to sleep just like that. This was a very bad scene.

"If you can't beat them, join them, and strike them hard from within."

reply

Because a computer technician can't work out, right?

Oh brother...

It is not just that, obviously. I assumed I did not have to provide every single detail to give my opinion. I am not explaining something, just giving an opinion.

In the spirit of whatever, let me say to you that the scene was very bad, because it is obvious that, even if the CT works out, which is highly unlikely when raising a child alone, but so be it, the punch in question would never put that doctor to sleep; not impossible though, but very unlikely, therefore very unrealistic for such realistic performances and so forth in this first episode. That was the only scene I found unrealistic.

It's a TV show. What are you doing is you're not going to suspend your disbelief?

And there are far bigger stretches than a guy knocking another guy out with a single punch.

It appears that you have a ton of free time, because you are discussing the sex of the angels here. That is my opinion. You have another, so let us leave the discussion. I am...

An unusual one.

"Discussing the sex of the angels" = Italian idiom. Basically it means "babbling about nothing." (The sex of angels cannot be determined, and it is also possible that they have none, so there is no point debating it.)

reply

Interesting. I never heard that before.

Coincidentally enough, I DO have a lot of free time this summer (I better enjoy it while it lasts, I'm taking 18 credits this fall semester!) but I thought his nit-picking was worth criticizing.

Yeah, I didn't have a problem with the knock-out punch either. Some people do have glass jaws, and the father was seriously due a lucky break right about then.

I found some free time to come here and give you a lesson in manners and fighting.

First of all, you must be very young to criticize an opinion, no matter how strange or unusual it may be for you. Opinions are like tastes, they cannot be discussed in the sense that your opinion is the right one, or wrong for that matter. What you can say about the author of an opinion, the same author can say about yours. It is really pointless and something that only an immature adult and/or young man would do.

Second, you must be even younger when it comes to fighting. You have no bloody idea of what fighting is, considering your opinion about the punch in question on the first episode of this series.

I know a bit about fighting and am absolutely sure that, unless you have very specific knowledge of anatomy, as well as a lot of practice on giving knockout punches, you will probably never put anybody to sleep with a single punch, not ever. I admit that it is possible though, but extremely unlikely. You see, it requires a lot of technique to do that.

Even I who know sensible / pressure / mortal body points, and practice martial arts since I can remember, find it practically impossible to knockout with a single punch when an opponent is aware, from the front side, as in the episode.

So, a computer technician can workout all his life, whatever, but to do that it requires a lot more than bloody workouts.

Do you get it now?

If you are wondering why I am using this tone, that is because you insulted my opinion, therefore myself. So, do not be surprised with this...

Then it is unlikely but it is a TV show and not exactly the biggest stretch of disbelief most fiction would have its audiences do.

That computer technician mention too was really silly and maybe even offensive too.

There's nothing to get. It's a TV show. Lighten up.

If you are wondering why I am using this tone, that is because you insulted my opinion, therefore myself. So, do not be surprised with this...

You were being irrational. Don't be surprised if your opinion is insulted the next time you act so.

This series is in the Sci-Fi genre, but the first episode has shown me that it virtually is close to one hundred per cent realistic, which contradicts its genre, but that does not matter to me, what does is that it felt like it to me.

Therefore, after viewing much of the first episode, watching the realistic performances throughout, I suddenly saw the computer technician giving a simple punch to a relatively strong and aware doctor, and thought to myself, "Uau"! In that moment I was perplexed not because of the punch, putting the doctor to sleep, but because it was not realistic as all other scenes, in some general way.

I usually am very flexible and understanding when watching movies, and I do suspend my beliefs, but that scene was very unrealistic, especially because I know a bit about fighting; however, I sure am not the only one who feels like this.

In regard to opinions, I guess you do not get it either. You are very immature. Just think like this: if everybody thought as you do, in the sense that, if someone reads or listens to an opinion that he or she considers wrong or strange or whatever, and then goes insult it to its author, don't you think this world would be even worse than it is today? Fortunately, there is a lot of mature people "out there," and many who are evolving, but it is obvious that many are not mature and never will be due to proud, lack of personal experience, difficulty to understand, difficulty to place oneself in the shoes of others... These are not directed to you, just the immature defect, for all I know.

There's no contradiction. There are just some genres or movies and shows, regardless of genre, that are more fantastic than others.

I;m sure the writers never intended the viewer to think that they wouldn't be prepared to use creative license whenever they wanted no matter how grounded their story is.

Holy donkey balls! The both of you are being childish.

It's a TV show, it's not always suppose to make sense or follow whatever rules you have set up nice and neat in your head. This is true whether it's scifi, fantasy, horror, drama, comedy etc. I understand your point except for the fact that you feel such a need to defend and argue for it. Did it detract from your enjoyment of the show? If not just let it go.

As to someone being irrational and so they deserve to have their opinion insulted, grow up! You obviously just like to yank peoples chains... a less obvious troll but a troll none the less. Like you said, it's just a TV show, so who bloody cares if someones opinion is a little irrational or rigid? Does it affect your enjoyment of the show? If not let it go.

And as you were both being either childish or a jerk, don't be surprised next time your actions are called into question. Because people need to start acting in online forums more like in real life, with some manners and respect. This hiding behind a computer screen so I can let my more base , rude and unsavory side out is getting to be a bad shtick.

I liked the first episode as well but its not necessarily an original idea. I've seen an episode of "Sliders" cover this issue in almost the same way 20 years ago.

Still, original or not, it looks promising.
