Women are better at destroying other women than men are.

Dangling participle, I know. But that is my point.

Let me ask the MANY women watching this show. Is this TRUE? I am learning that it IS true.

The show carefully illustrates that MEN are more interested in exploiting the sexual nature of women where WOMEN producers are going DEEP in the girls' psyche for the most devastating and everlasting harmful "kill" for the sake of ratings.

The men are still capable of harm, but it bothers them a LOT in some cases. Even GAY men dont want to see this serious deep psycholigal harm come to a woman. The men seem to have much more of a moral compass where the women producers do not.

Look at innocent Madison turning from a timid PA to a producer who is a MONSTER. It excites her! This show does not paint women in a good light at all. I dont think that women viewers are picking up on this. Just the opposite. Rah rah "Girl Power"! I think Shapiro is leading you al down a differnt path an you dont realize it. I think Shapiro is a genius , BTW. I DO not think she is a modern day toxic feminist. I dont think she is a SJW. She is just *beep* smart. Waay smarter than most people. I give her that. We'll see. I am not really liking season 2 so far. Off the mark so far. Waay off the mark. Season 1 was EPIC.

I dont watch reality shows like The Bachelor on TV for this reason. I think it is sick. I LIKE THIS show for exposing all that.

I think Sarah Gertrude Shapiro (creator of Unreal) realized this about herself and OTHER women on The Bachelor. She had regrets and quit. Then went on to expose the show and how it brings out the very worst (OR simply the TRUE nature of women...huh?) in women working in this part of the industry.

Shapiro is NO fan of these shows. I dont know if she is trying to expose that this type of reality TV like the real Bachelor creates these horrible women producers, or that the shows simply bring out the TRUE nature of women which is to destroy other women. Utterly destroy them! For life, in many cases.

Every women producer HATES (consciously or subconsciously) the beauty that the contestants were born with. So they get the worst, psychologically damaged ones they can find and destroy them on National TV. Remorse is shown...briefly, but they don't show lots of women producers resigning en mass. Nope. They just show the producers getting BETTER at destroying other more beautiful women.

Ladies, am I right?

The "Hot Rachel" joke/meme has GOT to hurt even the most psychologically stable of a women that the barb was aimed at. It does not seem to be going over well with our Rachel Goldy. At all. Ladies, would that bother YOU..if it were said time after time? Not just once? Be honest.

I think you would find Chet's 'Male Empowerment Spa/Retreat' full of like-minded pu$$ies with whom you could bond over topics such as this ^.

I thought that was funny, too, and making fun of the whole threatened-white-male empowerment idea.

Women are emotional destroyers. We can find the weakness in a female and destroy her emotionally and mentally, often more than a man can.

I mean, I don't know why you would hinge your judgement on an entire gender on one tv show. That said, I don't really think this show was meant to be feminist. It has two female leads but that doesn't make it a "feminist" show in the slightest especially because Quinn especially seems to try and adopt as many masculine traits as possible and actively rejects femininity at every turn. A lot of how people tend to write supposed "strong" women.

However, I don't think that just because show delves into the dark side of women means its anti-feminist. I think its important for media to show women's dark sides and all the horrible, awful things we are capable of. Calling it a woman's "true" nature however is very hyperbolic. Being an emotionally manipulative vampire is no more the true nature of women than being a sadistic sexual predator is the true nature of men. Both are extreme, extreme examples of the depths that the genders can stoop to in their respective capacities for harm. With men it tends to be physical dominance and intimidation and with women it tends to be emotional harm and manipulation, though there can certainly be overlaps.

Though I wouldn't be so quick to say that exploiting someone sexually doesn't lead to emotional harm. It is certainly dehumanising and at least when it comes to emotional power play it still acknowledges a person as more than a walking slab of meat. Honestly though I appreciate this show for being full of reprehensible people, especially women, because we're allowed very few opportunities to be the depraved anti-hero. Why should male characters be allowed all the fun of moral complexity?

Also I doubt that what the producers are doing has anything to do with the attractiveness of the women. It's all about serving up dramatic, cutting-edge tv to the masses. It's exposing the depravities that have to be present in the average American viewer to be willing to sit and tune into watching women be herded like cattle and forced to fight over the attentions of one man. In a way it's actually a very male-powered fantasy produced and packaged by women which I think makes a neat social commentary about how both genders can be affected by institutional misogyny.

I thought that was an insightful post and told folks on another board to come look at it because I think you articulated what is going on with some insight. Others may agree or not. We all have choice. Just wanted to tell you that I posted it elsewhere (RHONY) and say thx.

I would be extremely insulted if there was someone who looked like me and just say my name was Julie I'd be super hurt if I worked around another girl that looked a lot like me and they gave her the name "Hot Julie" and said it everyday. it would kill me inside for sure. especially if she actually was way hotter than me.

DearAnonymous,

were you referring to me and my post as the OP? Read my post again. I did NOT label the show as Feminist OR anti-Feminist even though Shaprio has proclaimed herself a STAUNCH Feminist. She is a great story teller using her real life SIMILAR experiences on The Bachelor as a basis for Unreal.

I made a point of finding every interview I could with her since I am fascinated by her genius. She said when she as a young producer just like Rachel, she was a STRONG feminist. That is why Rachel had that Feminist message T-Shirt on in Episode One. Rachel is what Shapiro was and what Shapiro became. Shapiro HATED herself for not just compromising her ideals but DESTROYING her ideals for the sake of making a living. Shapiro hated herself for being so GOOD at destroying other women.

This show is Shaprio's penance and cathartic therapy to expose just what goes on. In the process she is making huge$$, vindicating herself and entertaining millions of viewers like us.

So DearAnonymous, I dare say I AGREE with each and every point you bring up. If you think that I did not, I apologize. Re read my post and I hope You will see I am being VERY objective and a little judgmental as possible. I am just posting observations that I recently LEARNED from Shaprio and the show. Things I did NOT KNOW until I watched this show.

SHapiro herself proclaims she is PUSHING a strong Feminist message with UnReal. If she is, I don't really notice or care. All I see is a great story and incredible characters and first rate acting.

To say the show is educational too, is an understatement. Boy, I have learned a lot about human behavior. Not many of us are really exposed to this dark side of the Entertainment Industry ...and what DRIVES these people and what TYPE of person it takes to survive and flourish in this niche. Kind of scary..to me, anyways.

Would any of YOU feel OK about destroying other people for money? ...for a LIVING? It has got to eat at your soul sooner or later. It it doesnt eat at your soul, then please, God save you.

If this was her intention from the start, how do you think it's holding up, watching season 2 compared to season 1? The show has been renewed for season 3. Do you think that if the writers find themselves short on storylines, that they will take the low road and I don't know, "sell out"? Will they turn the show into a sensational spectacle of women behaving badly towards each other without there being any greater message?

I'm not worried about that. Marti Noxon's running this. This show could run twenty episodes per season and still come up with fresh topics and ideas for season three.

reply

Yep, you're totally right that women are better at destroying other women than men are.

reply

I mean, it's a generalization. However, a woman would likely have better insight into how to make another woman feel a certain way. The same could be said for men dealing with men. That being said, if you simply and fully know someone's weaknesses, you know how to hurt them regardless of their gender, etc.

reply

Women are better at inflicting short term damage on each other.

It starts with how we're socialized as children.

Boys slug it out and move on.

Girls will smile to your face and then whisper behind your back and make everyone hate you.
