The show is too dramatic

Even Mary's suicide in season 1 was pushing it - that's the kind of thing a show does in season 5 when they're running out of ideas. I can't take it seriously with so much far fetched drama, they would have been much better off sticking with the ins and outs of show running and the comedy and drama that goes with that, and plots like Quinn suing Chet. It had potential to be really hilarious and good, with really good character arcs (was going that way early season 1) but they've ruined it with the melodrama.

I think part of it is in fact the intentional choice to use melodrama with a sort of Shakesperian way about it.

The show is too dramatic

That's why it's so awesome.

I agree. I preferred season 1 where it was believable and was more of a real life indictment of the Bachelor. I know they wanted it to be bigger and more dramatic but it is past the point of believability and just a regular soap opera now. Still interesting characters but I would have preferred they left out the whole undercover reporter and murders. Like c'mon. And it made no sense why Coleman and the rich guy would have fallen in love with Rachel and Quinn so quickly. Or the whole Ruby and the Suitor fiasco. Everything was a bit too conveniently wrapped up. I applaud the writers for trying to do something different and move the story along but last season was just much stronger.

Oh no! I'm only finishing up season 1 and already not buying a lot of the drama..Rachel's besotted 'suitors' included...and now you're telling me there's another two in the next season?
Gawd..
Yeah, I share many of the views here. I personally like my drama to be a bit more grounded. Will still watch it but just not with the same vested emotions. A shame as, to me, it's a bit of a lost opportunity to really delve in there..

Well, it is on Lifetime. It was always going to go that way.

The show isn't about realism or believability it's about themes (jealousy, control, success, cynicism, etc). To explore those themes and put them into sharp focus you need dramatic events. How the characters respond to the dramatic events is what shows their true nature.

This is the essence of art. It explores the human condition. UnREAL pushes reality television themes and dials it up to 100 to explore the issues.

I know what you mean.. but for me, at least, those themes are totally lost when the situations are implausible.
The Mary situation for instance. I wasn't moved or shocked by that at all because I was just groaning and pretty much yelling at the TV.. well, der guys what did ya think was going to happen?"
