I was curious enough to download the TOR browser and peruse the Silk Road 3. There's nothing particularly secret about how to do this, and it doesn't require vast computer sophistication. Yep, lots of contraband, or at least so they claim. Here's a straightforward article:

I didn't bother with a VPN, since my Internet access isn't from a public network. My understanding is that a VPN would hide my access and specific usage from my local service provider (or whoever has access to their records). In this case, a VPN would prevent the service provider from getting tipped off that I was running the TOR browser. That might be a good idea in general, but I didn't see any urgency about it. There's nothing illegal about running a TOR browser, although it may possibly earn you a higher level of attention.
I'm curious how well those Silk Road drug transactions actually work, but not curious enough to try. And it's just an intellectual curiosity; I don't have or use illegal drugs. I'll have to look for sites on the web were people post anonymously about their transactions, successful or otherwise.
I wonder what the numbers are for sales of drugs on the Silk Road versus on the street. Probably 99+% of the sales are on the street, and the Silk Road is statistically insignificant.
Interesting stuff.
