The Apples?

I couldn't help but notice that there is an apple on the table in almost every scene that includes the characters sitting at a table. It is usually one in the center, but in the scene with Dano's character sitting at the table alone in costume, there is one at every empty seat.

Any significance to this? Or just a simple part of the set design?

I didn't notice that myself. Thanks for pointing it out.

Apples have a lot of mythology behind them, all of which have to do with the fruit bestowing (and in one case taking away) eternal youth.

There is of course the biblical apple of knowledge. Eating it not only gave Adam & Eve knowledge but also caused them to become mortal - and thus lose their external youth. The apple in Christian myth thus became a symbol of sin and the Fall of Man.

In Greek mythology the Golden Apple bestowed immortality (and thus eternal youth).

In Norse mythology the golden apple were eaten by the gods (the Aesir) in order to remain forever young.
